Troubleshooting steps taken:
Sudo apt remove steam, sudo apt purge steam, removed .steam folder. Pulled latest .deb file from https://store.steampowered.com and reinstalled. Fresh install produces the same issue.
Hello @Aerodin, in general, no OpenGL application including Steam should be capable of taking down the system, and this reads like a video driver issue.
Any ideas on how to trouble shoot? Other than this error message I don't have anything else to go on. Everything else works as intended so the only thing triggering this issue is Steam.
Fwiw I have a fairly fresh installation of 22.04 and it works fine. I use the Beta branch and I have an AMD GPU. Also using X.
Apparently it was a video driver related bug (AMD) that was quickly fixed and pushed out so the latest apt update and apt upgrade has resolved this issue and the issue no longer repeatable for me.
Kisak-valve was correct about it being a video driver issue.
Glad to hear that it started working. Closing per the last comment.

Your system information
Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:
Started up my PC. Tried to launch Steam - normally it launches.
Instead my monitors flash off and on and I get sent to the login screen.
All other apps etc. work as normal. No changes since yesterday when it was working and today when it wasn't.
