Your system information

  • Steam client version: 1676836260, API v020, 19 Feb 2023
  • Distribution: Ubuntu
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: Yes
  • Have you checked for system updates?: Yes...? I regularly update/upgrade my build, and the Steam auto-installer pops up regularly.

For a couple months, Steam has been working the same on my Ubuntu build as on my Win10 build. Soon after installing Steam on Ubuntu, however, I noticed context menus failing to work properly:
--Attempting to open Library or Properties from small mode fails regularly, I need to open large mode and access Properties through that route.
--As of this last week (10 Feb -ish), I have been unable to access individual games' Properties from any location: as such, I cannot change Proton settings at all (especially since sometime this weekend (around 18 Feb), when Returnal started failing Precompiling (hang at ~70% until 120 seconds pass, and a force-quit error pops up)). I see a Steam Web Helper window pop up and disappear immediately. Steam then has a bar appear at the top of the window stating "something went wrong while displaying this content," with an error code (see attached screenshot).
--As of 20 Feb, around 00:30 (UTC -5), it appeared that a hotfix was released, but now the Steam Web Helper refresh error happens about once every 30 seconds. This takes window control away from the active window and I need to stop typing this for 5 seconds every 30 seconds, or shut down Steam. This also closes any active right-click or top-menu pull-downs. While in Steam, this causes the active UI screen to flash and refresh, displaying the error code, and turning entirely black. This is new behavior. Before, it was passive, and only happened when trying to access the information in the active panel (like trying to access Properties for a particular game).

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Open Steam.

Hello @andrewxc, please copy your system information from Steam (Steam -> Help -> System Information) and put it in a gist, then include a link to the gist in this issue report.

If you completely close steam, then run steam from a terminal, are there any hints? Also, it might be interesting to check if there any hints in cef_log.txt, steamwebhelper.log, and webhelper.txt in the ~/.steam/root/logs folder.

This is an unrelated video driver issue https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/6538#issuecomment-1432761235.

Hi, @kisak-valve . Thanks for the heads-up.

I double-checked Steam's status using "top", and it was not there.
When I ran Steam via terminal, I received several LibdBusMenu warnings: "Trying to remove a child that doesn't believe we're it's [sic] parent."

Your system information suggests that Steam is running on your integrated GPU while the rest of the system might be running on a discrete GPU due to DRI_PRIME=pci-0000_30_00_0 getting set. Any chance that there was a difference in behavior when you started Steam from the terminal?

@kisak-valve i had the same issue with the beta client when running on my discrete rtx graphics card

I'm also having similar issues since a few days ago. Closing windows will show them completely black for half a second. Right click opens the context menus but I can't click on any of the options, they're ignored and the context menu goes away. This is true for example for game properties in the Steam library or the right click on the profile picture in the chat. Doesn't seem to work anywhere

Using Steam Beta on Arch Linux w/ AMD RX 6600

I never changed any options. However AMD set up its GPU settings and Steam installed is the default. The only thing that changed recently is the update to Steam.

An update just dropped. The only noticeable change that has been made is that the windows that spontaneously appear just after the blink occurs have changed from a generic gear symbol to a Steam window symbol.

Can confirm this is also happening to me. Desktop PC with AMD + Mesa on Arch + Gnome.

I'm experiencing the same issue on Arch also using the beta client, affects native and runtime version, KDE 5.27.2 on Wayland using Mesa 22.3.6

Hi,
I am having the 'UI screen refresh/flashes' problem as well (since a while now -- just found this report).
Sometimes it flickers by itself, or by moving the Steam window, or by highlighting elements of it
(Edit: when I move the client window sometime the entire content disappears, showing only the background color)

Steam Linux Beta client (Built Mar 2 2023, version 1677802780)
Arch linux updated as today ( wayland, KDE 5.27.2, AMD Mesa 22.3.6, linux-zen kernel )

(Edit 2: I tried to check any message with 'journalctl -f' while the misbehavior happens, but there is no relevant info)

I don't experience the flashing window issue, but I also have context menus not working (i.e. they display, but clicking on an option has no effect, the menu simply closes and the click goes to whatever is underneath it – e.g. selecting a different game in the game list). I can still access game properties through big picture mode.

Current steam beta
Lubuntu 22.04
AMD Ryzen 7 1700
AMD R9 380X, mesa 22.2.5

I have the same issues a MerkaST, and can confirm the problem is persistent on clean installs for me (Ubuntu Pop!_OS 22.04) and have had it since Feb/Mar.

I was able to even replicate it with Ubuntu 22.04 and Gnome, with fresh drivers and everything.

LMK if any log files would be useful! Am new to posting issues for steam.
