Hello @celphy, this reads more like a Steam issue that happened before Proton itself had a chance to run, so I've transferred this issue report to the steam-for-linux issue tracker.
If you restart the Steam client, does that have an effect?
Thanks. I assume this is somehow strongly correlated with Proton 8.0-1, as other Proton version launch without issue. Restarting the Steam client AND/OR PC doesn't change anything, both standalone and from the terminal.
I suspect that the Steam client isn't automatically downloading Steam Linux Runtime - Sniper as a dependency of Proton 8.0-1 for some bugged reason. I saw similar here, but restarting the Steam client cleared the snafu for me. Can you search your Steam library for that runtime and if it isn't installed, test manually installing it?
Steam Linux Runtime - Sniper
App ID. 1628350
Is indeed already installed.
€: The issue does not replicate on the Steam Deck for me. The "Downloading content" completes in about 5 seconds and then the process continues.
This issue seems specifically related to Proton 8.0-1 as the newly released Proton: 1681743047 experimental-8.0-20230417 does not display the same behavior. It so far persists after system updates and reboots.
are you running flatpak or native version of steam?
I am experiencing the same thing on Arch linux 6.2.12-arch1-1 with ~native~ Steam-runtime 1679680416
restarting steam makes no difference
are you running flatpak or native version of steam?
Currently running native.
Proton, and most game, require
I assume this isn't relevant to only a specific Proton version not working as intended. Other versions run fine.
The problem seems to persist with Proton 8.0-2.
I had the same issue with all the Proton 8 versions, even Glorious Eggroll. Disabling MangoHud solved it for me. An issue for this is tracked on MangoHud https://github.com/flightlessmango/MangoHud/issues/1014
unrelated issue came up on my arch install, had to re-do everything, upon reinstallation i found that proton 8.0-2 works now
To be clear, i have never used MangoHud, but I do not doubt I had something on my system that was breaking it. I have no idea what package could have been the culprit, but now that I confirmed that I can launch games just fine with proton I will keep my eye on the issue
Hello, I have the same issue with the game The outer worlds: Spacer's choice edition. Every other games tested works as expected.
My Os is POP!_OS 22.04. Steam is installed via apt.
I have Steam Linux Runtime, Steam Linux Runtime - Sniper, Steam Linux Runtime - Soldier and Steamworks Common Redistributables installed. I have uninstalled MangoHud.
Regarding Outer worlds the game is stuck on "Launching" with all the proton's version I have tested. (Tested Experimental, 8.0-2, 7.0-6, 6.3-8).
The Wine Prefix of the game 1920490 is created as expected by steam.
PROTON_LOG=1 does not create any logs in my home folder.
Restarting Steam or the computer doesn't seem to fix the issue.
I have the same problem as @aureliensoria when running Outer Worlds Spacer's Choice Edition
@adrianlshaw I resolved my issue by uninstalling steam (via APT) and installing the flatpak version instead.
After further analysis, I had the problem with every new game install (Proton/Windows games only).
Same thing happened to me with The Outer Worlds. Seems to be a bug on Steam in the stable channel. After switching to the beta channel it seems to be working fine.
This is also happening to me with Guilty Gear -STRIVE-, happened on Guilty Gear Xrd on the first times, but got to fix it. Still haven't been able to fix -STRIVE-. Tried Proton 8, Proton Experimental, Proton GE 8-7 and Proton 7, none worked.
Cannot install flatpak version as I'm on Nobara Linux which doesn't have a functional flatpak for steam (see https://nobaraproject.org/docs/using-flatpaks-on-nobara/packages-nobara-provides-that-should-not-be-replaced-by-flatpaks/)
Did try beta Steam, also no results
Also got no logs at all by enabling Proton Logs
I got it to work, and once again like Xrd, no idea what fixed it. At least it does work now
proton experimentalx1 2024-01proton 8.0-2x2 2023-07proton 8.0-1x4 2023-04PROTON_LOG=1x2 2023-07
Both when switching from an older Proton version, as well as when newly installing a game the startup stalls with Proton 8.0-1. I tried fresh installs of Borderlands 3 and Sable, as well as switching Hunt: Showdown form 7.0-6 to 8.0-1. I can test other games if it helps.
PROTON_LOG=1 %command% seems to create no log files, the process appears to get stuck beforehand.
