You can't write message to friends until you hover the mouse cursor in the text area.
I closed once again the issue yesterday https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/9216 and BOOM you updated the beta and broke it again.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

1. double click a friend in friend list
2. try to write, it doesn't write
3. hover the mouse cursor on top of the text area, you can now write
