The --nofriendsui should prevent the chat window from opening when Steam is started up. Unfortunately, it no longer works since the latest update (that includes the major UI rework, good job on this one!).
Steps for reproducing this issue:
Run Steam using /usr/bin/steam-runtime -nofriendsui -console %U.
