I had this issue https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/749 using ubuntu, I switched over to linux mint and it acts the same way but it says something a little different now.

When running steam:

On Ubuntu 12.10 with latest updates and with Catalyst 13.1 , I also get a segfault in /home/nazgul/.local/share/Steam/steam.sh: line 343 when trying to enter big picture mode.
i do not see any X related message, but in steam.log I see

I also have this problem. Same as everyone else here, no crash dumps, it segfaults so it never gets to the point where it could recover from the error. Perhaps something to do with proprietary AMD drivers?

I regret to say it is not fixed for me. Unfortunately I cannot point you to any crash reports since system information does not list any. Not sure how I can help.

@nazgul77 try a reinstall of Steam, it looks like you may have a corrupt file

I did that, but to no avail.
Actually the crash is gone. it is a different issue now. I could see when invoking steam from a terminal. what happens when clicking on "big picture mode" is that the window disappears but no full-screen window ever appears. the client keeps running.
Will report a new issue after checking if it has not already been reported.
