When downloading a Proton game, SteamOS will place compatibility data and the shader cache on internal storage. I haven't found a way to change this.
Some games can have a whole lot of additional data attached to them (sometimes 5-10GB) which then becomes the limiting factor over just game data. This is tricky as this additional game data is not easily tracked in SteamOS, nor is the user told how big it's going to be before they download a game.
This is a problem for users on the 64GB Steam Deck. I use a 1TB SD card but I can't reasonably fill it with Steam games without carefully managing my internal storage.
Hello @sw-thompson, in general, the Steam client manages the location of the game's wineprefix, not SteamOS as a platform, so I've transferred this issue report to the steam-for-linux issue tracker.
