Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

She expects when she clicks on various UI to not be blasted by white flashes (she is photosensitive) or to deal with lingering black squares.

She expects Steam to remember it's position/size on reopen. (it no longer does)

*I am reporting this for my roomate.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Open New Steam
  2. Mouse over things or right click items/games
  3. Before the UI is drawn there will be a white rect flash in place of the UI before it is filled in with text and color. (she is photo sensitive)
  4. In some cases the UI will leave behind black rect's covering parts of the Steam client for some time after a dialog is closed.
  5. All UI has an odd draw lag to it.
  6. Open Steam and resize/place. Close Steam and reopen and note it does not remember place or size.
  7. Opening (Library) to "Small Mode" will some times display the "Large Mode" making it impossible to see/read/click anything.
  8. Opening (Library) to "Small Mode" will be sized incorrectly and scale incorrectly
  9. Opening (Library) to "Small Mode" will display (in barely readable incorrectly scaled text) outdate / wrong game info. The Screenshot shows Steam not remembering the correct window/size placement, scaling is whack and it's displaying incorrect info about a running game (not updating correctly).

An example of some of the glitchy menus, fwiw:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwFuCqakOf4

Might need to watch that in 60fps to see them

Aapocalyptech 2023-06-26 github

And some more; in this one you can sometimes see flickering over on the lefthand side of the screen, too. Again, might need to watch in 60fps. Also, it looks worse "live"; the video capture doesn't get all the flickers.

And, for good measure, some recent steam logs which I noticed was asked-for when submitting a semi-related bug:

Sure would be nice if this was dealt with. Pretty sick of bright flashes all over the screen. Valve seems to think "Flash Bang as a feature" is a "thing."

The rect draw "flash" is still an issue on top of the clicking through menus...I wonder how many years this will go on...place your bets!

?ghost 2025-03-18 github

This is still an issue. Menus are all drawn at screen coordinates 0x0 before being moved to where they should be creating the now "classic" nagging flashes.

You can see the nasty white rect draw flashes in the menus and mirrored at co-ordinates 0x0 with the offset of their draw position relative to the steam window.

You may also notice LIBRARY is selected yet it still shows Downloads...I have to click on Library more than once to make it actually change. Every since the "UI feature parity" BS to add GPU acceleration the UI is a mess. Menu click through is still there even with the compatibility turned on, rect flashes, unresponsive menu items (click it does something, normally just reloads what is loaded rather than what was clicked on). UI "Squash" (shown in the first screenshot/OP off my roommates machine), Cloud Sync constantly reenables itself then nags you next launch about being unable to sync...Steam is a dumpster fire and these tickets are years old already!

For the record when I first opened this both my roommate and myself were running nVidia GPU's. I however am now running an AMD Radeon...same same. So on the topic of system specs etc this clearly has little to nothing to do with system spec or setup for anyone that might say it's our setups/hardware. Different GPU's, GPU brands, drivers, wildly different environments. @apocalyptech is on IceWM, I'm on CTWM, @Shannibelle is on XFCE. I've experienced this on multi GPU (nVidia) machines, GTX cards, Quadro cards, Radeon cards, Intel CPU's, AMD CPU's...Steam is just broken.

As a note for this post enabling GPU acceleration seems to fix this...but for the reason I have it disabled in the first place it breaks other things. @apocalyptech and @Shannibelle will have to weigh in on if they also have it disabled but it should work either way...and it used to. There are many reasons why someone could/would want GPU acceleration disabled...much like I want cloud sync disabled...There are options for these things but they often do not work or constantly reset themselves. For myself given Steam with the UI update iirc 2 or 3 years ago the client 100% broke due to GTK dependencies. Steam no longer worked -at all- if run on an XScreen other than 0.0 and would wrongfully attach to the wrong GPU even when run on 0.0. If it chose the GPU for 0.1 (like Counter Strike 2 does https://github.com/ValveSoftware/csgo-osx-linux/issues/3395) but was then run on 0.0 it would never launch. Like wise if you launched on 0.1 and it chose the GPU for 0.1...it still would not launch...[slow clap for Valve]. So GPU acceleration disabled and launch for 0.0 you can finally launch the "Steaming Pile." [Bonus slow clap for Valve.] [ see https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/9942 : https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/9591 : https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/9980 ]
