Your system information

  • Steam client version (build number or date): Unable to view
  • Distribution (e.g. Ubuntu): Zorin OS 16.2
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: [Yes/No] No
  • Have you checked for system updates?: [Yes/No] Only when starting Steam, but can't confirm is successful
  • Steam Logs: steam-logs.tar.gz
  • GPU: AMD

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

  1. Start Steam
  2. Steam update dialogue appeared. Can not confirm if an update downloaded and installed,
  3. New login dialogue displays,
  4. Transparent game promotion dialogue appears. When window is moved using command bar, window content appears,
  5. Various transparent dialogues start appearing (command bars are visible),
    a. Other dialogues appear to reload and take window focus,
  6. Can start a game via notification icon, but transparent dialogues keep relaunching and taking focus, forcing me to retake focus in the game
  7. Can exit Steam, only by Steam notification icon

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Start Steam
  2. Subsequent launches now show where a dialogue could be, and grabbing by an invisible command bar drags the window, but without content
  3. Got the idea from issue 9665 and may very well be the same issue:

Hello @anfokaboom, if you completely close Steam, then run steam from a terminal, does that have an effect?

Hello
When i ran from terminal, the output from my first post is what occurs. I guess to answer your question though, running from terminal produces same issues.

Fixed it! Probably not for everyone, but I did a complete uninstall and purge of all Steam files as per the highest scoring post here:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/217872/how-do-i-remove-steam

Reinstalled through the Zorin software center, updated, and the new UI became available!

I should note, the version that works for me is from Canonical. The version from Valve is still borked

Nothing extracted yet.
