Your system information

  • Steam client version (build number or date): Jun 21 2023 21:17:38
  • Distribution (e.g. Ubuntu): Ubuntu 23.04 + Flatpak
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: No
  • Have you checked for system updates?: Yes
  • GPU: AMD

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

The new UI is completely broken for me. The menus are scaled wrong, dont display all of the menu elements, and jump around when I mouse over it, making it unusable. Is it possible to rollback to the older version until the new version is more stable?

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Move mouse over the top menus

Have the same problem on Majaro

Same issue, UI is gigantic and the pulldown menus cannot be interacted with properly and are also not fully displayed - cropped about halfway through the words.

Also the settings window is completely broken:

No amount of attempting to adjust the scaling settings in Ubuntu / Gnome have any effect whatsoever, the Steam client just has it's own ideas regardless of any current scaling or resolution settings implemented.

Update - getting into the settings window while there's an active download allowed me to toggle the scale text and icons to match monitor settings option on and off, which resulted in the client UI scaling to be ... normal? Is that the word?

so... is there a config variable value that is not being interpreted correctly by the new client build?

I could use the old UI by starting steam from /var/lib/flatpak/exports/bin with -vgui as a command line option.

Hello, this issue reads like a symptom or side effect of the issue being tracked at #9632. Is everybody who is seeing this issue using a higher resolution display, and have the Steam -> Settings -> Interface -> Scale text and icons to match monitor settings option set to off?

You should be able to workaround this issue by completely closing Steam, and running Steam from a terminal with steam -forcedesktopscaling 1 or STEAM_FORCE_DESKTOPUI_SCALING=1 steam.

for me both behaved exactly the same

Tried steam -forcedesktopscaling 1 that does indeed work to work around the issues here.

-forcedesktopscaling 1 fixes the broken menus for me, but I have a high resolution display, so the interface now appears tiny. I can live with this temporarily.

Thanks @kisak-valve

Is there a reason why this is not set as default as it seems to break things badly if it is not enabled? Good thing that it can be overridden it with flags though.

for anyone interested, it also fixes issue where you cannot grab window to move it around. With out scaling enabled it was around one 3rd of the top window (from left) that i could grab to move window. With steam -forcedesktopscaling 1 command grabbing works from entire top section of the window. Sadly does not seem work with just setting up scale text and icons option, so i guess i will set launcher to use this flag

This also fixes #9619 for me.

steam -forcedesktopscaling 1 fixes it for me. (4k display, ubuntu 23.04, nvidia proprietary drivers). Had the issue if I had the scale text enabled or not.

Hello, per "Fix a case where menus could get clipped if dpi scaling is enabled." in the 2023-06-29 Steam client beta update, please opt into Steam's beta client and retest.

Can confirm all the scaling issues have been fixed in the latest beta. Windows are appropriately sized and can be dragged from the right side.

Confirmed, beta solves my issues

  • Menu are scaled correctly
  • Move widow "grab area" is correctly sized

I've just noticed that this issue still seems to affect the steam overlay for some reason. Everywhere else, this is fixed.
