Your system information

  • Steam client version (build number or date): 1687386907
  • Distribution: Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: No
  • Have you checked for system updates?: Yes

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

Games running on Steam (any game) only run for 1 - 2 seconds, enough to load the animations but not get to the game menu. After that the game freezes. The system slows down until you stop the game manually using the Steam client or by killing Steam. However, in some cases the game continues to load when another application (browser for example) is open and displayed on the screen (browser in active mode).

Rolling back to the previous Nvidia driver (525) fixed the issue momentarily. After a day the problem returned.

This only happens with applications (games) launched from Steam. There is no problem with other applications launched in full screen.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Star Steam from the launcher or terminal
  2. Play any game

Hello @jalcam, this reads like another symptom of #9586. Can you test if disabling the Steam overlay avoids the issue?

Hello @kisak-valve . Thank you for your reply. I have disabled the Steam overlay but the problem persists. I think this is a different issue.

After these weeks the error persists. Reinstalled the Steam deb client and reinstalling the game wont fix it. However native games for Linux work fine.

Are these native games or with Proton compatibility?

There are two versions of the Nvidia kernel driver for your card: closed and open source/in-kernel driver. Which one are you using?

Nothing extracted yet.
