Hi, I don't know if this is Distro fault or not as I don't see any error/strange logs via dmesg but when I download games on Steam, after some times it freeze completly my distro and I cannot even switch to console mode so I've to turn off my pc

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Download a game that has 50 or more GB
  2. Wait some times
  3. Freeze

Hello @xSylla, in general no OpenGL application including Steam should be capable of locking up the entire system. This reads like a kernel or video driver issue.

Infact seem strange but I see no errors in dmesg

Edit:
I'm gonna try with an oldest kernel version
Current kernel anyway is 6.3.12-200.fc38.x86_64 (64 bit)

I tried with an oldest kernel and it happened again, so not kernel fault

Anyway if not needed, you can eventually close this issue

I have a surprise for you all.

Ubuntu 23.04 . Latest OS, latest AMD drivers, Steam Beta.
Sometimes Steam indeed hangs up so badly so even killing all its processes through System Monitor hangs the system.

Some few weeks ago it was enough to kill all Steam processes then to kill Xwayland process - and the system was ready to run Steam again without reboot.
Hangups were not as prominent too.

Now?
Every once awhile Steam hangs. At least once per day, that's for sure. Especially when trying to install something big, like CS:GO.
Steam just hangs, wasting space on desktop, NOT RESPONDING TO ANYTHING (checked through System Monitor).
INCLUDING OS's PROMPT TO QUIT THE PROCESS.
Knowing my drill, I open System Monitor, I kill all assotiated Steam's processes, I try to kill Xwayland... and everything freezes.
Only a reboot helps.

Not sure if I'll be able to dig any logs up.
Tell me what do you need and I'll scrape something up.

Should I open a separate issue for my case?
We can probably split https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/9721#issuecomment-1646527440 to that issue too.

Update

I checked again all drivers and kernel
If I'm not wrong I had no changes on mesa drivers recently and the kernel isn't the issue as I tried the oldest too
I haven't found anything on kernel logs
I even changed distro but still the same issue appear

I don't know if this is something related to the new platform (cpu ryzen 9 7950x3d and gpu rx 7900 xtx) maybe some kind of incompatibility?

Same issue here. It happens mostly when opening steam library or a game. Even trying to kill the process in system monitor doesn't seem to work, only logoff quickly enough or doing a reboot

  • Ubuntu Gnome 23.04
  • kernel 6.2.0-26 generic
  • kisak-mesa 23.1.4
  • AMD Radeon rx 570 4GB
  • Steam Client version 1690583737

Not that same case, mine completely freeze everything and you cannot even switch or logout the session

I also have this issue, steam locks up when downloading a game randomly, eventually whole system locks up.
AMD 6800 XT
Ryzen 5950X

Debian 12

same issue on Ubuntu 23.04 Wayland session with Intel integrated graphics. Whole system freezes, only happens on Wayland session not on Xorg.

@kisak-valve Do you have any update here?

I tried again with all linux distro and it completly freeze everything yet.
Do you have any tips to give by any chance? Something to check so we can try to fix that?

That's all my pc spec if needed:
Motherboard: Asus rog strix x670e-e gaming wifi
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D
GPU: XFX SPEEDSTER MERC 310 AMD Radeon™ RX 7900
Ram: 32GB DDR5
SSD nvme m.2 1TB (where I download games)
SSD nvme m.2 500GB (where I put my system)

getting this on my laptop. Periodic hangs of 5-10 seconds of the entire desktop, especially when processing updates and other disk-heavy stuff, even though my system has a relatively fast hard drive and more than enough space and resources to run updates.
