are you running out of vram or something? Seems like a likely cause given that everyone who does complain about low performance on protondb seems to be running older 2GB Nvidia GPUs.
Trace replays perfectly fine here but it immediately consumes over 3GB of VRAM even in the menu.

It seems like nobody is able to get more than 15FPS in this game without disabling dxvk with PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1, and most of the reports made in the last 10 months were with a 6-8GB VRAM GPU (RX 6600, RTX 3060, RTX 3060 Laptop, RTX 3070). I've 8GB VRAM on an RTX4070 laptop.

HOW TO SOLVE PROBLEM
The game requires at least 4 GB of VRAM to run with dxvk. If you have less, use wined3d instead (if using proton, set
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1).Original issue
The game runs at below 5 fps when using dxvk, but runs fine under wined3d (more than 45 fps on average). Replaying captured apitrace from wined3d with dxvk yields a similar decrease in performance.
