Monster hunter wilds has this issue

Wilds has this issue on the vulkan beta even without the descriptor heap test branch so not entirely sure its related but could be.

hmm....maybe because im on a hybrid gpu setup? Ill try again here in a min
EDIT: yeah for me it black screens without the test branch 100% of the time
can't get logs just yet, but forza horizon 4 was completely black for me on heaps with native wayland, not even the intro video was visible. Audio was playing as usual. Not tested xwayland.
yakuza Kiwami 2 (2025) also has the black screen bug on Nvidia 595.58.03
Black screen also on launching PRAGMATA with heap rebase branch, nvidia 595.58.03. Using RTX 5000 series if that matters
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 also seems to be affected. Black Screen even in the menu. Sound is playing and I can also load my save but screen stays black the whole time.
I'm on Arch Linux, KDE Wayland, kernel 6.19.12, nvidia driver 595.58.03 and RTX 5070 Ti. If you need a proton log, just tell me, I'll create one.
BTW: Without heap the game freezes on startup (already reported to valve), at least that is fixed by using heap.
Happening on Resident Evil 9, nvidia driver 595.58.03 & RTX 3060Ti. The game stays on a permanent black screen, the game has audio, its interactable, but no display/render whatsoever, disabling heap fixes this issue.
CachyOS, niri 25.11 (b35bcae) (Also tested on KDE Wayland and x11), kernel 7.0.0-1-cachyos
The game without heap works, display and everything is normal, but the performance its really bad, with low GPU usage and high vram usage.
ok So monster hunter wilds black screen is fixed! now and dlss issues are also fixed with dlss for silent hill 2
The Division 2 starts fine, but image freezes a dozen seconds after entering the world or running built-in benchmark. In-game audio still runs and compositor is responsive (although Xwayland server died). Doesn't happen without descriptor heap.
Tested on CachyOS with Nvidia 595.71.05 and RTX 4080 with proton-cachyos-native (installed from the repo) 10.0-20260424 using VKD3D_CONFIG=descriptor_heap PROTON_VKD3D_HEAP=1 to enable.
dmesg shows:
NVRM: Xid (PCI:0000:01:00): 109, pid=711336, name=TheDivision2.ex, channel 0x00000046, errorString CTX SWITCH TIMEOUT, Info 0x3c050
Happens on both Cosmic desktop and Niri, with and without gamescope.
all resident evil 9 gfx issues with heap on are solved
Silent hill 2 dlss issues are also solved
Halo infinite does not work at all with heap now
@HansKristian-Work any of the phases you just did for nvidia? or is it all amd so far?
Halo Infinite works again but has audio issues a weird buzz confirmed on two machines.
Lastest VKD3D version, lastest Proton CachyOS, black screen with Pragmata still.
7.0.8-1-cachyos
595.71.05
PRAGMATA actually stopped blackscreening for me with heaps enabled on the same proton-cachyos version, but 595.48.07 drivers (latest Nvidia Vulkan beta driver). This new driver probably fixes black screens on other games too acc to something I saw in a different issue thread, probably worth trying.
Pragmata ran flawlessly on my 5070ti with heaps enabled using PT on stream amazing work
yakuza Kiwami 2 (2025) also has the black screen bug on Nvidia 595.58.03
can confirm this is fixed on nvidia driver 610
I am encountering this issue on Forza Horizon 6 with the 610 driver. Issue was not present on the 595 driver.
RTX 5080, CachyOS, KDE Wayland, kernel 7.0.10-2-cachyos

Did you try to alt-tab? The game creates 2 full screen windows

The issue I'm having is similar to what was described in the OP: "UI may still be visible but the scene does not render and with sound ok"
When I remove the VKD3D_CONFIG=descriptor_heap launch option, the game renders fine, but then the game crashes after about a minute, so using descriptor heap is required.
huh, for me, the game works fine on 610

Small update. With nvidia driver 610.43.02 and current vkd3d-proton, I can now at least see the menu and UI but the actual game still renders everything black.

@nkrok getting the exact same issue - did u figure it out?
I've been experiencing the same with proton-cachyos-11.0-20260521 but the game crashes right away in the main menu.
@nkrok i managed to fix that issue by downgrading proton-cachyos-slr (so removing the descriptor_heap stuff)
see: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/9789#issuecomment-4608697140
seems like a regression from this: https://github.com/HansKristian-Work/vkd3d-proton/pull/2943
Using latest CachyOS-proton release: 11.0-20260521 with Nvidia drivers: 610.43.02 seems to cause Monster Hunter: Wilds, to show a black screen but nothing loads, and a window pops up prompting me to either wait or close the game, this doesn't happen with say PRAGMATA, and disabling the descriptor_heap from the cachy-proton makes the game run again.
Let me know if this is more of a cachy-proton issue to report it.
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 (non-Ti, 8GB, GB206, PCI ID 10de:2d05)
Driver: 610.43.02
OS: CachyOS Linux (Arch-based), KDE Plasma 6.6.5, Wayland
Kernel: 7.0.11-1-cachyos
Proton: proton-cachyos-11.0-20260521 (steam linux runtime)
VKD3D-Proton: 3.1.0
Summary:
Two distinct failure modes depending on whether descriptor_heap is enabled:
Mode 1 — Without descriptor_heap (VKD3D_CONFIG=enable_experimental_features):
VKD3D falls back to VK_EXT_descriptor_buffer
World renders correctly, game runs at 50-60fps Ultra
After ~5 minutes: Xid 109 CTX SWITCH TIMEOUT → VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST → FHC00 crash
dmesg shows VA space mapping failures immediately before Xid 109:
NVRM: dmaAllocMapping_GM107: can't update VA space for mapping @vaddr=0x1cc600000
NVRM: _gvaspaceMappingInsert: NV_ERR_INVALID_ARGUMENT @ gpu_vaspace.c:2022
NVRM: Xid (PCI:0000:01:00): 109, pid=45049, name=forzahorizon6.e, channel 0x00000023, errorString CTX SWITCH TIMEOUT, Info 0x16c034
NVRM: KernelChannelGroupApi alloc RPC to vGpu Host failed
Mode 2 — With descriptor_heap (VKD3D_CONFIG=descriptor_heap,enable_experimental_features + PROTON_VKD3D_HEAP=1):
VKD3D init: VK_EXT_descriptor_heap enabled (32 / 32 size, raw uav counter on)
Black world rendering — UI visible, game runs, no crash, no VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST
Matches the known 32/32 RDNA2-style path issue mentioned in PR #3033
Tested combinations (all failed):
descriptor_heap,enable_experimental_features
descriptor_heap,enable_experimental_features,no_upload_h_vram
descriptor_heap,no_upload_h_vram
enable_experimental_features,no_upload_h_vram + PROTON_VKD3D_HEAP=1 + PROTON_USE_NVAPI=1
Note: RTX 5060 Ti (16GB) users on 610.43.02 report Mode 2 working correctly. The non-Ti 5060 (8GB, same GB206 die) hits black world on the 32/32 heap path. Unclear if VRAM size or a die/firmware difference is the factor.
I had this black screen but with UI issue on Forza Horizon 6 like others reported. I fixed this by removing the descriptor_heap flag, which caused the game to crash after about a minute. I fixed the game crash by adding these compatibility variables instead:
VKD3D_CONFIG=no_upload_hvv,single_queue %command%
However the game is still unstable, crashing sometimes 30+ minutes later even with this.

@pgosar try this: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/9789#issuecomment-4624216394 (worked for me)
So I have the same UI-only rendering bug with Forza Horizon 6 as shown above, it started with whatever CachyOS packed into their release 20260521. If I understand their funky branching method, they used VKD3D-Proton at commit 110e8bd.
Using skip_application_workarounds makes the 3D stuff show up. This is certainly weird. I can't tell yet how stable it is (without RT, anyway).
I am getting a black screen still on Monster Hunter Wilds using proton-cachyos-slr. How can I fix this?
@Canpake59 are you using latest 595 series driver? If so, try you might want to try latest Vulkan beta driver.
@mati865 Probably, I am using whatever cachyos using by default. What's the best way to use the beta vulkan drivers?
Arch Linux and CachyOS unfortunately ship 610 series driver which is the worst choice in regard to descriptor heap support. For Vulkan beta driver you can use AUR packages. If you need further help please ask on more CachyOS related channels to avoid diluting this issue.
So would I be better off using the beta vulkan drivers over whatever cachyos ships with by default?
I had issues with earlier versions of NVidias 610.xx driver and had to revert to a specific Proton(/VKD3D) version to make Forza Horizon 6 work. Otherwise I had a black rendering underlying the game UI.
The newest 610.57.04 driver mentions various black rendering fixes for multiple games. FH6 was not listed among them, but is fixed (for me). I'm now using the latest Proton-CachyOS that didn't work before 610.57.04.
Anyone else affected by black rendering bugs might want to reevaluate.
