Symptoms

When running the game with Proton 11.0-2 in a Cinnamon (X11) session, moving the mouse whenever the pointer is visible on-screen (the first opportunity being the main menu) causes stuttering that drops the frame rate significantly. This is similar to the stuttering I've seen in Haunted (see issue #10221), but the vast majority of games I play don't have any such problems. I'm reporting it now because I've seen it in more than one game (and thus it may be a Proton bug worth fixing), but only in these two games so far.

To capture the attached Proton log, I just moved the mouse around on the menu before closing the game. However, the same stuttering occurs during gameplay as well.

I've identified the following workarounds:

  • Run the game with Proton 10.0-4 (but this is not ideal because it breaks the video logs on the computer in David's private lab, which show as solid green instead of the intended images).
  • Choose the "Display Configuration" option when starting the game from Steam, and disable "Hardware Cursor" in the config menu before running the game itself (but this is not ideal because it seems to cause some minor input delay).
  • Run the game in a Wayland session? (I tested it using Sway, and did not see the stuttering. I did see the mouse pointer blink while moving. I found that this blinking was reduced by enabling "Vertical Sync" or otherwise limiting the frame rate. By default the game seems to want to run slightly higher than my refresh rate.)

Reproduction

  1. Run the game with Proton 11.0-2 in an X11 session, preferably with some frame-rate monitor (e.g. MangoHud) enabled, without disabling the hardware cursor option.
  2. Wait for the main menu.
  3. Move the mouse.
