Works perfectly after the following workaround: must unzip RE 6 movie.rar, downloaded from https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DxFBxQ-PEhLorrdOeTyB6nW-qzSlQYE3/view , inside the folder Steam/steamapps/common/Resident Evil 6/nativePC/movie. After that, runs flawlessly (tested Campaign and The Mercenaries, both with maxed out graphics).
I'm having the same problem. To me it happens on Ubuntu MATE 18.04

Hello! I have VLC player and I was trying different encodings but so far no luck. Could you tell me the settings for video encoding use or share the video archive. Thanks!
Used winetricks-git and ran: WINEPREFIX=~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/221040/pfx/ winetricks -q wmp11
Game is starting without issues. Just played some minutes but it seems fine. ACO is preferred because of crazy stuttering with llvm.

@random2324 thanks for sharing but unfortunately that trick is not working for me.
Got the last winetricks here:
wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Winetricks/winetricks/master/src/winetricks
and ran:
WINEPREFIX=~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/221040/pfx/ ./winetricks -q wmp11
wmp11 got installed properly.
When going back to steam and clicking play I am still experiencing the same issue. The game start, I see the capcom screen, a couple of screens where I can say yes/no and that's it. I am stuck on a Black screen where I can see move the mouse but with nowhere to click.
Am I missing something?
Distro: Ubuntu 18.04

hey try this, for me this works perfect, issue with movies framerate but not to worry
get a recent version of winetricks (older versions do not support wmp11 installation): "wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Winetricks/winetricks/master/src/winetricks"
"chmod +x winetricks"
install wmp11 in silent mode (without silent mode it didn't work for me): "WINEPREFIX=/gamespath/steam/steamapps/compatdata/221040/pfx/ ./winetricks"
enable silent mode in winetricks, "enable silent install", later install "install a windows DLL or component"
find a choose "wmp11" later of install two packages, you are able to open resident evil 6 and play
This with proton 5.0.7
Silent mode should not be needed after https://github.com/Winetricks/winetricks/commit/f6cc727a55cf5a2b710e9e3eccb3b550e2d04f01
protontricks 221040 -q wmp11
@jdetychey
You probably want to remove your game folder under compatdata and try again. If it doesnt work, it means something went wrong. Or there is another problem. Unfortunately I cant help here if it is driver related, as Im using mesa.
Also you can use the new 20200412 release of winetricks which probably comes with your distro. After this you can use the protonstricks wrapper like soredrake mentioned.
Thanks a lot for your help and comments. I tried a couple more workarounds and ended up fixing my dual boot to play on windows 눈_눈
Better luck next time
Hello,
It seems i am running into same problem. Read that someone just created new 32-bit prefix, then installed wmp11 and it worked, tho i wanted to try it too, i always have problem with 64-bit wine prefix. This prefix stuff realy confuses me, i've been messing with Resident evil 5 and somehow got it working thanks to github post, but i tried every method in this thread but couldnt get it to work. It may be that i just didn't do it right, but still, i am asking if anyone here could give me dum-proof set of commands/orders how to create a new 32-bit wineprefix in RE6 compatdata folder(221040) or suggest me other methods that havent been posted here.
I am using newest Steam proton version(5.13-6)
Using Pop-OS! 20.10
8GB of Ram
Intel Xeon X5670
Radeon RX550
please contact me for any additional info, i am realy tired of trying to resolve this problem alone, please help me :)
Edit: I woke up and an idea struck me. I have RE6 installed on second SSD therefore proton probably had problem finding it? In other words i moved RE6 with other game and now that its on the same SSD as Steam instalation it finaly works.
Upstream Wine seems to have a fix in 6.22: https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=51944
The game now working, but randomly crashed with both proton-7.0-2 and experimental-7.0-20220427c.
Have same problem. Game randomly crashes.
Test it with Proton-7.0.2, latest Proton Experimental (now experimental-7.0-20220427c) and proton GE 7.3 and 7-16 .
Hope this information helps. Departures occur when showing game videos. Can occurs both before the video and after. Another good crash trigger is the Steam screenshot F12. Very often, wanting to capture the photo next monster, I got a game crash.

Was finding interesting thing, with precompiled shaders video in game freezes, but if it run next time video played normal.
And when shaders for video not compiled than game works without crashes. If video preplayed than game crashes.
I have 3 computers with follow specs:
On 1 and 3 the game is launching.
On 2 the game shows Infinitely black screen instead video which should be plays before main menu.

Proton log: steam-221040.log
On all machines all settings and updates are exactly same.
Verifying file integrity in steam client I doing several times.
I wonder why the game gets stuck on the second machine.
Hall help needed.
I will answer myself:
Accidentally I found this issue did not happens on machines with installed wine.
And I started find needed packages by installing step by step over all wine package dependencies.
Definitely needed some from two packages mesa-libEGL.i686, libglvnd-egl.i686 They has cyclic dependencies and installed only together.
It has been a while since I've played this but now with Proton 8.0 (also current experimental) games is not starting and you get a message box saying it need windows media player.
Proton log has the line:
12332.857:0130:0134:err:module:import_dll Library WMASF.DLL (which is needed by L"C:\windows\system32\Wmvcore.dll") not found
Hello @ipr, it looks like Proton should provide a stub implementation of this dll (https://github.com/ValveSoftware/wine/tree/proton_8.0/dlls/wmasf). It shouldn't be completely missing. You might have a damaged or incomplete wineprefix.

Hi, reinstalling fixed the problem. I reinstalled as I was unsure what would be neatest way to reset the prefix or what was wrong with it.
RE6 Menu Text issue in startup big picture
Issue transferred from https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/8863.
@willWallace-RIT posted on 2025-06-28T19:20:17:
the menu text on only the boot big picture of steamos is a little mismatched in resolution.
I kind of remember this issue with one of the dx11 GUI libraries (imGUI?) but think the sampler resolution on post is not set right and it defaults. it does work right in a few options under a certain y axis threshold.
1.open game in on boot without going to desktop. get to main menu
