Offline works in 4.2. It froze for maybe 5 seconds at the character selection but came back and let me choose player/start game.
Alien Swarm (630)

Play button in the Steam client is sufficient.I have not encountered #276 (Alien Swarm Freezes after clicking "Offline Practice"), Alien Swarm has been free of crashes and (game-breaking) freezes for me. Since I'm using an old machine a config was required to get acceptable fps, someone on a mid-range machine likely wouldn't need to bother with that.
Hello, is anyone seeing an issue with this game and Proton 4.11 that would block it from being whitelisted?
I returned to Alien Swarm a few weeks ago, 10-17 May 2021 according to my logs. I noticed that there are GUI freezing issues with Proton 6.3 but Proton 5.13 seems okay. I haven't noticed any difference between Alien Swarm and Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop to date, in terms of Proton behaviour. For both Alien Swarm and Reactive Drop I need to set PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1.
Hello @Wedge009, setting PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 is not supported. Can you elaborate on why you need to set that?
If it's not too much trouble, I'd like to see how it fails without that launch option. Please set the game's launch options to PROTON_LOG=1 %command% and attach the generated $HOME/steam-$APPID.log to this issue report as a file. (Proton logs compress well if needed.) Also, please copy your system information from Steam (Steam -> Help -> System Information) and put it in a gist, then include a link to the gist in this issue report.
From what I recall, when DXVK was enabled by default with Proton 5.0 onwards, I needed to fall back to D3D to get most (if not all) games running under Proton. If I launch without any options, the game fails to launch - Steam would report the game is running for a brief moment and then the game would crash.
I'll try to get that information to you shortly.

I generally try to avoid forcing D3D at first, and only apply it when a game doesn't launch. I know Proton is a constantly developing beast but at least at the time I last played them (no earlier than 2020), I had to force D3D for Alien Swarm, Deus Ex Human Revolution, and Witcher 1. I don't have the D3D option in place for Deus Ex nor Witcher 3 so it looks like they are okay but I haven't played either recently.
Thanks, your system information tells us that you do not have 32 bit Vulkan drivers installed for your video card. Please run sudo apt install mesa-vulkan-drivers:i386 and retest.
In the logs, this appears as:
info: Required Vulkan extension VK_KHR_surface not supported
[...]
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'dxvk::DxvkError'
Wow, is that all it was? I removed all command-line options and switched back to Proton 6.3 and it seems to be okay, though I don't have time for a thorough play-test right now.
I still see quite a few mentions of PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 from users on www.protondb.com (generally speaking, not specific to Alien Swarm), so it doesn't sound like this (32-bit Vulkan driver requirement) is common knowledge. Is there a FAQ answer page somewhere that mentions this information?
BTW, thanks for the support, really appreciate what Proton does for the Linux community.
I didn't find any issues during a quick test against Proton 7.0-1.

I launched Alien Swarm. All seems to be running properly. It defaulted to 640x480, so I went into the settings menu, and successfully changed it to 4k. The switch worked wonderfully. I then went to Offline Practice. I was presented with a loading screen, after the loading screen, I saw where you select your class/loadout, but it was frozen. After waiting a few minutes, I found that the game had frozen completely. I've tried the various launch options, but none of them have had a noticeable impact.
My machine is running Solus Linux (so it has the latest NVidia driver). My GPU is a GTX 1070. I have 24GB of ram. If there is any other information I can collect or other things you would like me to try, please let me know. Thanks for all of your hard work on expanding the gaming options for Linux users.
