Looks like this game would benefit from support for Media Foundation maturing.
Just as a quick update, same as with EDF 4.1, as soon as you have a save that you can load (created mine on Windows), the actual game runs fine. Only opening the ingame keyboard makes the game freeze, which is unfortunately required to enter a save name.
The game somewhat works on my end after creating the save on windows, but regularly completely locks itself and freezes even before launching a mission. Does not happen on my regular Windows 7 installation.
The game seems to run fine on my machine after making a save on windows, but crashes consistently on offline mission 9(online mission 8) at random points during the mission, to the point where I have not been able to complete the mission.
I'm also getting irregular crashes, I could play for over an hour earlier but I just managed to obtain a log from when the game crashed (Game simply closes instantly). This can happen on any mission, I completed mission 9 just fine before.

Posting to say that game still (4.2-9) has issues (crash) whenever the keyboard is needed for writing, and like ib12 said:
crashes consistently on offline mission 9(online mission 8) at random points during the mission, to the point where I have not been able to complete the mission.
But I just saw this on ProtonDB:--
https://www.protondb.com/app/1007040#NPjlceven
--which says all crashes are fixed. They're using 4.11-11 with Protonfixes, but don't say which fixes.
Earth Defense Force 5 and Earth Defense Force 4.1 will no longer freeze when prompted to input text.
But I still get those freezes :(
No more text-entry crashed for me on 5.0-3!
I've been trying to run this with the new Proton 6.3-1, but it crashes immediately as soon as the initial "loading" screen fades.
No startup options other than PROTON_LOG=1. Here's the log: steam-1007040.log
Launching with PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 still works in that I get to the title screen and can load into a level. But that still has an unrelated problem that has occurred for me since I've been trying to play this with Proton 4.11, where it drops to 1 FPS after a few seconds in a level and I have to kill the process. Here's a log of that as well, I guess: steam-1007040.log
System Information:
GPU: R9 280
Driver/LLVM version: Mesa 20.3.5/LLVM 11.0.0
Kernel version: 5.11.10-200.fc33.x86_64
Proton version: 6.3-1
Hello @DonKatsu, fixme:vulkan:X11DRV_vkCreateWin32SurfaceKHR Application requires child window rendering, which is not implemented yet! in your log points towards https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45277. It may be interesting to do a test with Proton Experimental and share a log.
How about that, Experimental worked perfectly. Log: steam-1007040.log
Additionally, it even locks at 60 FPS for me now, where I was getting 30 at best from 4.11 through 5.13 with DXVK.
After playing through each mission again on Proton 6.3-2, I'd stick by my assessment of "works pretty great now." But I have still encountered some problems.
Most missions do hold 60 FPS very well for me, but a few run a good 10 to 20 FPS lower compared to Windows. Mostly rainy and foggy ones. But I'm guessing that's just overhead? Ones that are real bad in Proton do dip a little in Windows for me as well.
Occasionally, doing "retry mission" causes the FPS to take a hit after it loads back in. Exiting back to the main menu and loading the mission again returns to normal FPS, most of the time. Doing a different mission will also return to normal FPS. I managed to log a session where it happened on the first try, but it's 26 megabytes...
Perhaps related to the above, occasionally, a mission will have much lower FPS than normal. Which can sometimes be resolved by exiting the mission and loading it again. If not, restarting the game usually resolves it.
Lastly, it can take multiple attempts to regain focus from minimized when running fullscreen. Minor, but annoying.
EDIT: After doing a fresh install of Fedora 34 KDE, I've discovered that the performance of even Proton 4.11 is fine... On Mesa 21.0.3/LLVM 12.0.0 now.
Haven't played around in 6.3-2 yet to see if any of the above is resolved.
EDIT2: But now I have the problem where Proton or Vulkan picks the wrong adapter... And that 'Application requires child window rendering, which is not implemented yet!' problem came back on 6.3-2. (still on 6.3-4 as well) Experimental still works.
EDIT4: Mesa updated to 21.1.1-1 and now 6.3-4 works (again).
EDIT3: After hitting the mission "Doomed Queens" again on this fresh install, it once again had abysmal FPS the first time. Probably the most standout mission for this. After restarting the game, it was fine again.
So I thought, "Oh, maybe it's just a really rough shader" and deleted the shader cache folder for EDF5 and tried again. Sure enough, it's repeatable. So I guess that's that...

Proton log:

Symptoms
Same behavior as EDF 4.1 (#1193), the game hangs when selecting an empty save slot (so probably whenever it tries to open the ingame keyboard, if it's the same issue)
It might work if there is a save file already available, I will reinstall Windows to create a save and test again with that.
