From user point of view: game does not start.

From steam point of view: game starts and stops periodically (once every second ?).

From process tree point of view: rezinfinite.exe runs under proton's python process, but a rez.exe process spawns and exits as a sibling to that python process.

I'm able to get this running by installing xact via winetricks. Things work almost perfectly with PROTON_USE_WINED3D11 set. Without that flag, dxvk complains about child window rendering, which is why I think rezinfinite.exe breaks:

14172.514:002e:002f:fixme:vulkan:X11DRV_vkCreateWin32SurfaceKHR Application requires child window rendering, which is not implemented yet!

However, if I close this window, REZ.exe pops up a window running under dxvk. Setting video modes or changing any of the other graphics options causes the game to promptly exit, and it doesn't seem to want to run in full screen mode.

Distro: Linux Mint 19.1 Tessa (64 bit)
GPU: Vega 56
Driver/LLVM version: Mesa 19.1.0-devel/9.0.0
Kernel version: 5.0.7-050007-generic
Proton version: 4.2-3

With Proton 4.2-3 (and every other Proton version after 3.7-8):
Game launches to a window with a black screen and then nothing happens

With Proton 3.7-8:
Main mode of the game is playable (the first splash screen text is not displayed unless you use WINED3D11 launch option). The main mode of the game works fine, the "Area X" mode the game crashes.

Black screen with anything newer than Proton 3.7-8, and requires PROTON_USE_WINED3D11 to be used. Regression?

Kkisak-valve maintainer 2019-12-20 github

Hello @howels, looking at the logs I'm not going to consider this a regression. We need https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45277 to make progress before evaluating further.

(With Proton 3.7-8 the classic Rez mode is still playable with "PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%". Trying to play Area-X mode the game crashes with a "Fatal Error!" error message.)

Log (Proton 6.3-6): steam-636450.log

Symptoms

  • Game launches with a recent Proton version again!
  • On launch, the mouse cursor is invisible. Alt-Tabbing then displays the game's custom mouse cursor, in-game and outside of it. Mouse focus is stuck in the game, switching desktop workspaces & attempting to click on something only sends the clicks to the game.
  • The game's audio playback system has problems:
    • Transitional music pieces / sound effects between layers are completely missing
    • Sample timing is off, leaving noticeable breaks between samples that are supposed to be seamless & making the music feel slightly off overall

The audio problems become very noticeable by area 5. Because the audio is an important aspect of this game, this makes it technically playable but not very enjoyable for me yet.

Reproduction

  1. Install & start the regular game (VR modes not tested)
  2. Enter the main game mode (Rez -> play -> area 1) and play until a layer transition -> missing sound effect
  3. Play to layer 04, listen to the music & compare it to a Windows playthrough

I have uploaded a recorded playthrough of the first area that you can compare against non-Proton game recordings online: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtsbGrHXaKg
