Symptoms

No audio in-game or in menus.
No cutscene videos

Reproduction

Install, start game, no audio.

Other Info

Cutscenes are fixed using @GloriousEggroll's Proton fork (I think due to Media Foundation fixes), and audio works in cutscenes, but game audio itself doesn't work regardless of which Proton version is used.

On my system game just crash immediately after displaying initial splash screen.

For me everything works except audio, it would be awesome if you could add a log file to your post :)

Sslapin 2020-08-20 github

There is no log generated and it is unlikely I will be able to try any time
soon.
As most of games do not work on nvidia I guess I will keep to native ones.

This is not true. Most of the games work without problems on Nvidia.

Log file added. I was looking for it in the wrong location.

MMcMarius11 2020-08-22 github

haha i fixed it :),
just use protontricks and change os to Windows 7 ;)

protontricks 707030 win7

please use Proton-5.9-GE-5-ST it enables you to see every cutscene

?ghost 2020-08-23 github

Wow, that did the trick! Thanks @McMarius11

Confirmed switching to Win7 fixes the missing game audio.

Starting from version 0.3.1.1 (And internally, since the 20 February), Postal 4 is to be considered (At least, for me) borked due to UE4 Prerequisite redistributables install installer. (See #263)

Since that build, I’m unable, as the only GNU/Linux QA tester, to run the latest QA build of Postal 4. The currently public builds (0.3.0.1) are still working, however.

Now, despite the Steam Runtime installing the necessary redistributables as before, a UE4 prompt appears asking to install ¨Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime¨.

https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/703294620594995293/808408972800688128/unknown.png

However, compared to that other game, the redistributable nag screen can’t be cancelled or bypass in any shape or form (From my attempts that is).

Here’s what I’ve tried.

  • Tried to follow the UE4 installer process.
  • Refuse the UE4 installer process.
  • Cancel/Force-close the UE4 installer process.
  • Renamed the UE4 installer executable/Redist folder.

From the logs, It seems to try to install :

  • NetFx20 32bit
  • NetFx40Redist
  • WI45_XP_v3 32 bit
  • WI45_XP_v4 64bit
  • Windows6.0_KB942288_v2 32&64bit
  • VC140 32&64bit
  • PrereqSetup (?The UE4 installer named UE4PrereqSetup_x64.exe)

And it seems to fail, because it can’t found the vcredist_x86 files at `C:\ProgramData\Package Cache\AFA5BADCE64EE67290ADD24E0DC3D8210954AC6C\vcredist_x86.exe`

I’ve tried to point out this issue to RWS internally but I haven’t had much luck with it, so I decided to report that information publicly, since the current testing build is being release candidate despite no answer to that ¨minor¨ issue.

Can confirm this has happened to me on Fedora 33 as well. It gives an unskippable UE4 installer. Hopefully RWS does something about it.

This is on our list, sorry about that guys, it started happening when we updated to Unreal Engine 4.26. There's a workaround you can use in the mean time:

  1. Download the VC C++ 2015-2019 Redistributable x86 from this link : https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=746571
  2. Navigate to STEAMLIBRARY/steamapps/common/POSTAL 4/Engine/Extras/Redist/en-us
  3. Replace the UE4PrereqSetup_x64.exe file to this one, make sure to also rename the vc_redist.x86.exe to UE4PrereqSetup_x64.exe.
  4. Start the game as habitual, and proceed to accept installing the missing redistributable. The installation process should succeed and let you able to play the game

@RWSMarcinT I can confirm that this sorted my issue with Everspace 2

Thanks!

Fflarn2006 2021-12-25 github

@RWSMarcinT Thank you for your support! I tried this, and while the replacement prerequisite installer did finish successfully, the game just quit itself afterward, according to Steam. (As in, it showed up in the UI as no longer running.) I tried launching it a second time after that, and it once again gave me the prompt saying it requires the Visual C++ runtime, despite already having installed it. If I click No, it quits as usual. If I click Yes, it opens up the installer again, with a prompt to "Repair" or "Uninstall". Just for fun I clicked Repair, and that finished successfully, but as expected nothing different happened.
Would you happen to know of a solution to this?

EDIT: Switching to Proton 6.3-8 did the trick. Performance leaves a lot to be desired though, and FPS is unplayably low after exiting the first map.

BBlitzy 2022-03-21 github

So I tried out Postal 4 on Steam Deck as it was just certified as Playable by Valve (w/ Proton 7.0.1 as of writing).
Installation went smooth and the game ran and i was able to run around for a bit on first run.

However after closing the game and reloading it the videos stopped playing. The intro video showed up as a one of those old school color test screens and then disappeared and the game loaded in.

I closed out the game and did a verification of the local files, and ran it again. This time the intro video played but the screen stayed stuck on black. No sound, buttons do nothing. Each time I load the game after that it repeats this: it'll play the RWS logo video and then just stay on a black screen. Changing to Proton Experimental doesn't seem to change this.

I ran with PROTON_LOG=1 %command% in the launch options and this is what it spit out:
steam-707030.log

Mmathew2214 2022-04-20 github

just tried to launch the released version on proton 7.0.1. after the RWS logo its just a white screen. not sure how Valve's getting it to run on the Steam Deck. POSTAL 2 has a native linux build, but it seems RWS has since lost interest in that minority of its users.
UPDATE: same behavior on Proton Experimental and proton GE. even after applying the workaround mentioned at https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/4138#issuecomment-850575335
