The log has many lines of err: DxbcReader::read: Unexpected end of file which looks mildly interesting.

i verified the games files with the Steam Client right before attempting to launch the game, so there shouldn't be any corruption.

Which file system do you use

Mmathew2214 2022-04-30 github

my rootfs is BTRFS. it should be noted i get the same exact behavior when i move the game to my EXT4 filesystem.
if either filesystem was failing, i'd imagine something would show in dmesg about it.

Roger no that's fine. Was more if you used ntfs since that sometimes seem to give issues with proton 😁

The game needs the windows d3dcompiler_47.dll. With the wine one there are a bunch of

Could not compile shader: :214:25: E5017: Aborting due to not yet implemented feature: Implicit cast in structure initializer.
:216:21: E5005: Function "min" is not defined.
: Nicht implementiert.

Bugsnax worked "out of the box" on my Steam Deck, but had a black screen on my AMD tower with a 6700 XT GPU running Fedora 36 Silverblue with Steam in a Flatpak. I'm not sure what the difference is, as it's all Proton on Linux.

Copying a native d3dcompiler_47.dll (a few MB, not the Wine ones that are 300 - 400 KB) from another game that I had installed via Steam into the Bugsnax directory* (the one that Steam opens when viewing "Properties..." > "Local Files" > "Browse..." fixed the issue and Bugsnax then worked flawlessly.

(* For a Flatpak installation, the directory is at ~/.var/app/com.valvesoftware.Steam/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Bugsnax/)

Thanks for pointing out the file, @CME42!

Replying to https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/5806#issuecomment-1150765508

Is there some protontricks command that can accomplish this?

BBlisto91 2022-06-09 github

@mathew2214 you can try protontricks 674140 d3dcompiler_47 and see if it helps.
I don't know specifically about flatpak tho if you use that or steam deck

I'm not sure if this should filed here or at https://github.com/ValveSoftware/SteamVR-for-Linux/ but the VR update for Bugsnax seems to consistently crash SteamVR at load, with the view freezing for a few seconds, then the display turning off, and the Steam client closing when quitting SteamVR.

System specs:

VR Headset: Valve Index
OS: Debian (testing)
Kernel: 6.11.5-amd64
DE: Gnome 3 (X11)
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT (radeonsi, navi21, LLVM 19.1.3, DRM 3.59, 6.11.5-amd64)
Driver Version: 4.6 (Compatibility Profile) Mesa 24.2.6-1

I have the same issue with the Bugsnax VR version, it completely locks up the Steam client when launched with SteamVR open. Tried the usual steps like latest Betas, Proton-GE etc.. The Bugsnax window opens for a split second and then closes and SteamVR reports error 307:

I'm facing the same issue on SteamVR as mentioned above, but i'm getting error 203 instead

Confirm, ran into this issue while trying to run highfleet, leading to messed up effects and missing textures. Made a separate partition in NTFS on my machine, ran it there, no issues, BTRFS seems to be the issue as that's what my root is running Fedora 43.

Edit yeah i know this is about bugsnax but i figured i'd mention this given i was running into err: DxbcReader::read: Unexpected end of file while also on a btrfs system

Hello @NotActuallyMarty, please use #5020 for feedback related to HighFleet run with Proton.

Hello @NotActuallyMarty, please use [#5020](https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/5020) for feedback related to HighFleet run with Proton.

Will do was just dropping this here for folk to find, as troubleshooting a niche game can turn you up with little results and this is the first most clear post i found detailing the issue, which in turn let me fix it. Feel free to remove the comments if you find em unhelpful for the issue/discussion.

Cheers for all your hard work. Not been with linux too long but Proton is great and what y'all do is incredible.
