Mouse works fine for me here on Nvidia X11, but I can't seem to enable DLSS. When I launch the game, it warns me about a missing graphics card:

Maybe that has something to do with it if it can't detect my Nvidia GPU at all.

I tried the game on my nvidia gpu under both X and Wayland, haven't had issues with the mouse. However as stated above right you cannot get neither DLSS nor reflex(which got merged in vkd3d) to work as there seems to be an issue with the game + nvapi(you can force enable it with PROTON_FORCE_NVAPI=1 %command% however the launcher doesn't show)

PROTON_FORCE_NVAPI=1 makes DLSS works on Proton 8 and 9 Beta since those show the correct GPU in the warning, but on Experimental/Exp bleeding edge it says "no installed graphics card" and doesn't work.

For me the bigger issue is the audio crackles and drops out a lot. Unfortunately it doesn't get fixed by just throwing some PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC at it.

I get the information popup too. As it doesn't detect my GPU it doesn't let me enable DLSS, but even so, ignoring the warning, the game starts perfectly.

I tried starting the game with PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1, both individually and jointly.

Oddly enough, switching to Proton 9.0 beta was enough to enable DLSS for me. I didn't need to use PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI or PROTON_FORCE_NVAPI at all. I wonder why @tooSadman couldn't enable it at all and why @frozen-sea required PROTON_FORCE_NVAPI. Weird. What are your driver versions?

I’m also experiencing extra crunchy audio, I’m using an OLED Deck and not a Nvidia rig though. Happens regardless of proton versions I’ve tried so far.

So far, the game has been crashing right at the intro video; it would play for a sec (choppily) and crawl to 1 FPS and then crash. Sometimes it gets further, sometimes it crashes right at the start. I tried Proton Experimental (bleeding edge); Hotfix; 8; 9 Beta; and also GE-9.2.

I also get the same messages on startup claiming either there is no GPU or drivers are outdated.

This on Desktop Linux:

yes, its a Lenovo Legion 5 laptop, indeed. Im currently running the proprietary nvidia drivers, v 550.54.14 (NVML version 12.550.54.14) – just stock settings, so no Prime setup (I had to google what that is, to be honest)

I guess I need to put to clarification one moment here. I'm able to select 'DLSS' as an 'Upscale method' parameter, albeit it's not possible to select 'DLSS Frame Generation' option:

I managed to resolve the audio crackling for the most part by setting a different buffer size for PipeWire. Setting it to 50 mostly resolved it for me.

Command to run: pw-metadata -n settings 0 clock.force-quantum 50

Weird. I typically run a fixed 2048 quantum to work around crackling pretty much everywhere else, but lower quantum fixes this game. 1024 still crackles, but it disappears at 512.

I can try on a Lenovo Legion 5 as well rtx 3060, but I use the built in amd as main and nvidia only does heavy lifting(prime setup) and update you with results, but it will take some time.
EDIT: only difference would be cpu the 7 6800H and running 680m gpu with rtx 3060 doing the heavy lifting

NVAPI situation appears to be this:

  • On Proton 9.0 Beta, dxvk-nvapi does not yet support Nvidia Reflex so you can use NVAPI for DLSS but Reflex won't be available
  • On Proton Experimental / Bleeding Edge / Hotfix, dxvk-nvapi supports Reflex and will cause the game to crash so it's disabled by default
  • For anyone feeling adventurous, you could try using one of Experimental / Bleeding Edge / Hotfix but with nvapi64.dll replaced by the one from here: https://github.com/jp7677/dxvk-nvapi/actions/runs/8381623474 (then set PROTON_FORCE_NVAPI=1 and that should hopefully allow you to use both Reflex and DLSS)

… or you could wait until the fix lands in Proton proper.

ah, thats what you meant. I deactivated the amd gpu at some point when it was making problems with something

in the meantime, I tried the game on Deck, it runs fine! around 25-35 with medium/high settings, FSR Balanced
the input for the account linking was a bit finnicky, and upon exiting it crashed, but otherwise I had a ~1.5 hr session that was fine.
I did notice the mouse speed problem as well (Having played with mouse and keyboard as well as controller)

I was able to test it on the Legion 5, the game booted just fine, however:
the mouse snapping on wayland super hard is indeed present I assume this is something with mesa as the desktop is being rendered by the AMD gpu instead of nvidia, nvidia only does the heavy lifting in performance.
I can confirm that DLSS also worked just fine.
Same nvidia driver 550.54.14, you already have the DE and distro above as it is the same as the desktop.

The mouse issue is apparently a bug in Plasma 6 under Wayland, check out #7564.

The suggested workaround with --force-grab-cursor using gamescope works for me:

gamescope --force-grab-cursor -e -W 2560 -H 1440 --adaptive-sync -f %command%

Played over an hour now and did not encounter any other issues so far. What a time to be alive!

Makes me wonder if it could be something from the kernel or an entirely different setting from Manjaro, iirc back in the days when I was testing a few distros, manjaro had very weird behavior in some games(for example in the messenger the grapple hook rope was always visible even if you don't have it, you would think it's some DRM showing despite you playing the game from steam with proton ...)

I can't get the game to start with my Radeon RX5700 XT. It says I don't have Shader Model 6.6, but this card (from the spec page) has Shader Model 6.7.
What options do I need to pass to the client to get it to start?
OS is gentoo-linux-6.8.0, GPU is AMD Sapphire Radeon RX 5700XT, 32GB RAM.
UPDATE: forcing Proton to use version 8.0.5 gets me to the launcher screen, but then it crashes when it starts up the Sony splash screen.
UPDATE2: adding PROTON_LOG=1 to the launch options gets the game to start, and gets me to the opening screen. However, the log file fills up at a rate of about 2GB/min, and once I click "New Game" the screen goes blank and the game eventually crashes.

When moving the camera, the game stutters, even though the frame graph is flat and I keep steady 60 fps. This issue seems to also occur on Windows, but there the solution seems to be to disable hardware-based GPU scheduling. How does this workaround translate to proton? I have an AMD GPU with the mesa/RADV driver.

@Saancreed Got it going now. No args used, using bleeding and got dlss and reflex on. Turning reflex + boost on causes stutter after 15-20mins likely oc failing.

I'm not sure if this is a Mesa issue (again) like in several other DX 12 titles with RDNA 1. But trying to play Forbidden West leads to GPU hang here. As a "wild guess", because that fixed Talos Principle 2 back then I tried RADV_DEBUG=nodcc, but that didn't help in this case.

I must admit I don't know what "launcher window" you mean. When I start the game there's no launcher window. It immediately goes to the Sony credit screen. Maybe there's a difference between steam window and big picture mode (which I use)?

No, I don't get this error. I only tried "Hotfix" (which is set automatically by steam) and "Experimental" and both behave the same here.

I see you're on another Kernal version and probably another Mesa version as well (?) – that could explain problems with the game detecting your hardware. Maybe this is also the reason you get the launcher, because the hardware detection fails.

After playing for a day, in Proton bleeding using fullscreen exclusive was giving me very random system lockup forcing me to hard shutdown (Sometimes in 30mins, sometimes in 2 hours). Using Reflex still caused stuttering after 5-10mins, adding Boost was instant game crash loading ingame. (Arch/X11/536.25/3090/Proton Experimental bleeding)

Yes, what TheWyn posted. I can get that far if I use Proton-8.0-5; anything else I get an error message about missing Shader Model 6.6 But I also need to have PROTON_LOG=1 set in my launch options in Steam to get past that point. If I don't, the game quits out at the Sony splash screen. If I do have logging enabled, I can get to the game's own screen (the one with music and the links for "New Game," "Settings," etc. I can change settings there, but if I click "New Game," the screen goes black and it eventually quits.

I can't get the game to start with my Radeon RX5700 XT.

Works fine with my RX 6600 XT using the default version of Proton (which, for this game, is currently Hotfix). (Mesa 24.0.2; Xfce on Devuan stable.)

UPDATE: forcing Proton to use version 8.0.5 gets me to the launcher screen, but then it crashes when it starts up the Sony splash screen.

It crashed (Sony logo) when I tried Proton 9.0. I don't have details handy, but it's probably the same bug.

I've noticed a few graphical problems outside the initially-mapped area. Nothing serious, though: dust being blown along seems only half-rendered (sharp line at one edge, suggesting that one triangle is missing), and dust devils are rendered with simulated translucency (dithering, single-bit transparency). Also, some of these:

I figured out my problem. I also had amdvlk installed, and mesa apparently defaults to that. This was severely interfering with vkd3d-proton, causing crashes not only with H:FW, but also EVE Online. Uninstalled amdvlk, and now both run flawlessly (well, aside from occasional slowdowns because my rig is old).
Amazing, I love this game so much.

Mh. I'm really not sure if my problem is driver related. There seems to be a problem with the shaders. I get a ton of Fossilize WARN: Pipeline library handle 0x000079115a58a990 is not registered. warnings and after I deleted the prefix the GPU now hangs when the game tries to compile shaders.

Also, for completeness sake: as I suspected above the "launcher" is only shown when you use steam in desktop mode. In big picture mode it is skipped.

EDIT: I also checked the first posts steam-*.log file from the one with the mouse problems. There are no such warnings in that log.

I have been able to play this game on medium/low settings up until around level 14 with Nvidia latest and 6.7 kernel when I'm in a mission called Death's Door where I was getting hangs in the water escape sequence (avoided by swimming backwards) and then a firegleam part is now where I'm stuck. The game just hangs. Sound still runs but the logs don't seem to show much interesting things other than sound message spam once the game has hung. Proton-GE only one I have been able to play successfully. I'm not sure it's fixable if I'm running out of vram but I feel like the outside world should have more issues TBH with going over capacity.

I have had the exact same issue — I'm actually very pleased to see that someone else exists out there with the same problem, since nobody else has known what I'm talking about across the various places I've asked so far. Personally, I have 11GB of VRAM and otherwise decent specs (GTX 1080 Ti), and changing graphics settings doesn't fix the issue, so I really don't think it's because of VRAM or other technical limitations, and if it is, it shouldn't be. Various logs point to a nonspecific "access violation" (and for me, the process gets killed when it stalls out with an equally uninformative Xid 8 kernel message from the Nvidia drivers), which could mean a lot of things. If it would help the Proton devs, I can share the logs and dumps that I've gathered in the process of investigating the issue myself.

Out of curiosity, which Proton-GE version were you able to get it to work with? I tried with 9-2 and it didn't help. It would be great to be able to finally get past this quest!

9.2 works for me up until here but I'm not ruling out my system just can't handle it, as I'm actually on a 980 GTX or possibly hardware fault but it would be interesting to see if there is something wrong.

Oh, I thought you meant you were able to get through this part using Proton-GE. Given that we're both using mid-2010s GTX cards and people with more recent Nvidia and AMD cards appear not to have this issue, maybe it has something to do with older Nvidia cards? A driver issue, or the game/dxvk trying to do something that older cards don't support?

(For what it's worth, switching Nvidia drivers to any version between 525 and 550, or to 470, which the game refuses to boot with at all, doesn't appear to fix the problem. If it is a driver issue, it's not a recent regression.)

Played for 10 hours yesterday with 1.0.43.0 patch and 0 crashes/stutter. Arch/X11/ Nvidia 536.25 Drivers/Rtx 3090/Proton Experimental bleeding. Dynamic resolution scaling was set to monitor refresh rate, vsync and reflex off.

@chickazee4 @ensiform Kept an eye out for the "Deaths Door" mission and other then me forgetting to put the ladders down during the puzzle it came and went in the same sitting.

Mh. Those fossilize warnings were probably because I also tried amd vlk at one point. After deleting the shader cache and proton prefix the warnings are gone.

But the main issue (GPU crash) remains. In a "fresh" environment the crash occurs after the ingame shader compilation step. Once you start again it happens at the same moment, but without the compilation step of course.

And when I look at protondb it seems there are a couple more people having this issue (even on RDNA2 cards – so it doesn't seem to be an RDNA1 issue). Also seems most of them are also Arch users with same kernel and mesa. I also tried the mesa-git aur and lts kernel package, but that didn't help either..

So I'm still not sure where the issue lies ... proton, vkd3d, mesa, kernel ... (?)

I have the same issue, right after the boss battle in the water. If I stay above water it does not appear to crash, when i dive under water is when I crash. I've swam/dove throughout various bodies of water up to that point so I think it's something unique to the area.

I have the same problem on pretty much the same hardware, a Lenovo Legion 5. Tried with Proton 8.0-5, Experimental (bleeding edge), GE9-2, GE8-32 and 9.0 beta. Makes no difference. Some of them gives me a dialog box saying i have no GPU, some say my GPU is supported but runs an old version of the driver, 536. In reality i run 550.

OS: Arch Linux

WM: bspwm
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5800H with Radeon Graphics (igpu diabled in bios)

Not an expected workaround for most but I was able to get past it only by having the game installed on another PC and then finishing the cutscene at the firegleam on that level and then letting the save resume back on my PC. Been working mostly okay since. Few random things like the sound but no hangs that seem similar so far.

Tried it out on mine and didn't experience any issues, but this was on default Proton and SteamOS Preview, so my suggestion would be to try that.

I've put about 18 hours into it on desktop and it's been rock solid there as well. 4070 Ti with driver 550.67, Proton Experimental bleeding-edge.

Hello @jansalleine, it looks like the game sees both mesa/RADV and AMDVLK, and it's not immediately clear from your Proton log which Vulkan driver is being used by the game. So that there's no finger pointing between driver devs, can you test how the game behaves when it can only see one Vulkan driver vendor at a time?

I fixed it, the "Shading at half rate" option causes the UI rendering to crash the system and it does not only affect the quest/notes tab (it's just a 100% chance to crash in those), it can happen randomly at any point where UI is rendered.

If you aren't using precaching leave it on the main menu, you'll see it build in the background (in ".config/nvidia" I think), it'll build up to around 1.3gb. It won't crash after.

Thanks, with precaching on it doesn't crash! Was easier to track it that way. Now i can start the game but the graphics are very glitchy and laggy.

There was an update (1.2.48.0) and the launcher starts when I'm running the game in compatibility mode "experimental". Everything looks great until it gets to the "compiling shaders" screen. The first time, progress bar started at about 75% and when it looked done the "spinner" animation above the bar froze. The music continued. After some time I restarted the game and the screen was blank for a while and the compiling shaders screen was back with a full progress bar. Then, after a brief period the spinner froze again. For those without access to a different GPU, I just did some more troubleshooting and the Death's Door crash point affecting GTX 1000 series graphics cards can be avoided by downgrading Nvidia drivers to major version 515 ­— after doing that, the quest and subsequent cutscene run smoothly. I originally only downgraded step-by-step to 525, which has the issue, and then skipped down to 470 (since the versions between 470 and 525 are not packaged by my distribution anymore), which was too old for the game to start on, so I just barely missed the Goldilocks zone.

I've not commented here in a while since I played through the game on Windows in the meantime; but I tried the latest patches and Proton versions recently, and it still had the same stuttering problems. It would reach gameplay, but would be unplayable. It feels like its restarting the game engine (most likely not a correct term). I noticed the same behaviour in games in Horizon Zero Dawn (here, I also notice speeding up: sometimes, menu changes count require a confirmation and have a 15 second countdown before an automatic revert: this can happen within seconds) and the Ubisoft games Assassins Creed Valhalla and Immortals Fenyx Rising - both these games appear to reset the light sources every second or so. I should maybe try Death Stranding with also uses the Decima engine like HFW and HZD (while ACV and IFR uses Ubisofts engine). I assume these two engines in combination with the current Nvidia drivers, and maybe Manjaro and/or my hardware specifically cause this. Im unsure its something that can even be fixed in Proton itself, but who knows; I felt like I should just add this to my other comments.

Proton-GE 9.5 introduced a regression for my system with the 980GTX whereby I get an error from the game during map load that I've run out of memory in pagefile/vram. Forcing GE 9.4 instead of using the AUR Proton-GE always updated version still works. I assume this could be tied to changes in upstream vkd3d but not sure. It no longer complains about the lack of a video adapter on startup with 9.5 but yeah can't actually load into the game world.

Basically i've updated to the latest ubuntu and new drivers. I confirmed that the crash still exists.
However thanks to a ProtonDB report, I was able to successfully complete Deaths Door without a crash! The fix was to add the following launch option VKD3D_DISABLE_EXTENSIONS=VK_EXT_descriptor_buffer %command%. Haven't done any further testing, unsure if the launch option is necessary for the remainder of my playthrough. I plan to leave it unless advised otherwise.

Symptoms

FSR 3.1 seems to be broken under Proton for Horizon: Forbidden West. This is not true for every game -- only this specific title, and only under Proton. I do not experience this issue on Windows.

When enabling FSR 3.1 Frame Generation, steam and mangohud will report a stable framerate, but the framepacing of the image gets noticeably bad, with microstutters and an overall lack of smoothness. Disabling Frame Generation fixes the issue.

This issue is NOT visible in mangohud, or in the steam framerate counter. According to those reports, the performance is fine. The issue is extremely noticeable to the naked eye, though -- the game looks like it's running at 30 FPS.

btw this issue doesn't seem to be driver related, tested on amdvlk as well and pretty much got the same results (performance wise, amdvlk has graphical issues), FSR3 FG is not generating half as many frames as it does on windows

This issue does not happen on my Steam Deck or my Gaming Laptop with Nvidia running Arch.

The game starts and launches properly. When you either start a new game or continue a previous game the "compiling shaders" screen will then come up but freeze shortly after. The following lines are some errors I saw in the terminal when running steam from there.

Fossilize ERROR: Cannot copy unknown pNext sType: 1000283002.
Fossilize WARN: Recording graphics pipeline failed, usually caused by unsupported pNext.

I tracked down the pNext and sType as to something to do with vulkan variables but didn't dig much farther than that.

Reproduction

I can reproduce this on my PC every time I install this game. It even happens on other distros such as Ubuntu and Fedora.

  1. Install steam
  2. Install Horizon Forbidden West
  3. Enable Proton Compatibility
  4. Run Game and launch it
  5. Either start new or continue
  6. Wait till the title screen loads a little and then it will freeze.

After a recent Steam client update (since last week) I've been running into what seems like an out-of-memory problem. Several things happen: multiple sound channels cut out (background music, spoken dialogue, environmental sounds like wind; but not footsteps or animal sounds), then I see a whole lot of tall grass in places where it shouldn't be -- like all over a settlement --, the world map won't load (I just see a black screen with the animated cauldrons icon in the bottom left), and then lastly the textures of clothes get scrambled.
I'm also seeing a lot more breaks in gameplay with a black screen and a "compiling shaders" message.
This happens pretty consistently after about 40 minutes of gameplay. I'm using GE-Proton-9.19, though I had the same problem with 9.15. I did not see problems with 9.11, but that was updated before the steam client update so I don't know if it's related.
I'm using AMD FSR AA, and have frame generation disabled.
(also probably unrelated, I note that I have to explicitly enable and then disable frame generation, or else the framerate starts significantly slowing down. I cannot play for long with frame generation enabled, or the image starts filling up with artifacts).

This only started for me last week. However, I had many of the same problems -- texture corruption, prolific tall grass -- before FSR 3.1 was added.
I'm trying it now with frame generation enabled, and some steamwebhelper features disabled in the main client (I read somewhere that steamwebhelper tends to gobble memory). I'll see if that helps and report back. Frame generation seems to make the game much more laggy, though, so I'm not sure I want to stick with it.
UPDATE: nope, downgrading to GE-Proton-9.11 did not fix it. So this is related to the Steam client updating last week. Sure hope they fix it, because it's really unpleasant to have to restart the game every half hour or so. I can even force it to start breaking relatively quickly: fast travel to the campfire next to the door to The Base, walk through The Base, come out the west door, and when you walk out the hillside below is covered with tall grass. Gliding down on the shield-wing almost always triggers a brief black screen for "compiling shaders," and not long after that the other bugs will start accumulating and I'll have to save and restart.

Since last week's update the game rapidly accumulates the following errors:

  • tall grass proliferates in environments where it shouldn't be (ie, covers an entire hillside where normally it's just a couple isolated clumps, or fills an entire settlement)
  • the in-game map won't load, showing instead a black screen (even though hovering the mouse around the screen causes the sound of the map as if the map is there)
  • certain audio channels stop: music, dialogue with NPCs, most environmental sound, most combat sounds; but not the sounds of footsteps.
  • the "compiling shaders" black screen starts interrupting gameplay
  • certain campfires (which are the quick-save points) stop working
  • clothes start showing scrambled textures
  • at this point, I have to save and restart the game, because it freezes not long after.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. steam client auto-updates from last week's update
  2. play the game for maybe 20 minutes
  3. start noticing problems

I did not have any of these problems after the game updated to its current version over the summer. This only started happening after the Steam client updated last week. I am using GE-Proton-9.{11,15,19}, but that doesn't seem to have any effect.

Hi @kisak-valve , thanks for the tip. Do I need to reboot after changing that file? I'm using PAM, so I changed the limits.conf file and re-logged my user. But that doesn't seem to have helped.
I also see WARNING: Low /proc/sys/vm/max_map_count: 65530 will prevent some games from working in that same log file. Does that make a difference?

@simifor I verified everything just now, though it didn't find any issues. But I'll try playing again and see if it runs into any problems (I hope you're enjoying the game, btw). So far, since last week, I've only played long enough to fast-travel back to the mountains west of The Base, said, "yup, there's tall grass everywhere where it shouldn't be," and exited again. Maybe that's just a generic texture bug, but I don't think so. As for other reports, take a look at daniele-athome's post just above mine from two days ago: it links to the protondb page where lots of people are reporting issues similar to mine.
What's frustrating for me is that the game has been rock-solid ever since version 1.5.80 was released back in July; it's only the update to the Steam client last week that seems to be causing issues.
One other thing to ask about: I install the GE-Proton versions into .local/share/Steam/compatibilitytools.d/, and the client finds them there on restart. However, in the console output, I now see this every time I run the client:

Proton: Upgrading prefix from GE-Proton9-19 to GE-Proton9-11 (~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/0/)
Proton: Prefix has an invalid version?! You may want to back up user files and delete this prefix.

This message also appears when I reset it to use stock Proton, and my client is currently set to use 9.19, not 9.11, so I'm not sure what this message is. Is there something here I can safely delete?

UPDATE: hrm. Welp, after a couple days, in which I didn't play it at all, I did a couple things. One, I verified all the files, as you suggested. But then I found that I had a config file from pipewire (needed for the ardour audio editor) that sets a hard limit on memlock of 8152 kbytes. I set that to unlimited. I have no idea if that makes any difference (I still get the mmap error), but I just played the game for maybe 40 minutes without any issues with textures, music, the map, etc.

I dunno. I got nuthin'. I'll try a longer play session in a day or two and see if I can cause any errors.
(btw, I only just now discovered that turning on pre-caching makes the load screen go way faster, so make sure that's set in your Steam client)

Hey, somewhat unrelated, in that nothing is currently breaking on my build of the game (though I do still occasionally get the tall-grass-everywhere bug sometimes after fast-traveling): is there anywhere where we can see a changelog of patches for the client? Because my game client seems to have installed a patch every day this week and I'm curious what was being changed.
(I'm not sure if it's related to one of the patches, but my GPU temp dropped about 10°C from where it's been ever since the FSR 3.1 patch came out).

Also, another addendum (I'm not sure if this is the correct place to report it): there is still a bug in my version that Erund, Alva, and Kotallo don't correctly despawn after you talk with them after Singularity. I'm not sure if this is because I didn't go talk to them until after I was finished with the Burning Shores, or if that's always going to be an issue.

I'll try to remember on this, my fifth playthrough, to talk to them before I head to the Burning Shores, to see if it works correctly then. But it's also clear that the conversations with them are rendered differently (it uses the gameplay engine rather than the cinematic one you see on all other conversations) so maybe it goes deeper than that.

Also, has the bug with the explosive canisters/traps been fixed (previously, only damage from the first one or two canisters/traps would apply), or is that still an issue?

Update on the companions datapoints: I was correct about how to work around it. If you talk to all your companions before you talk to Sylens to start the Burning Shores, when you come back after completing it they will all have correctly despawned and left behind the datapoints to collect.

Hello, been having massive frametime spikes on my game, over 1000ms, every 0.5s of normal gameplay. Game is unfortunately unplayable.
Running Arch Linux, Lenovo Legion 5, AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS, Radeon 780M iGPU, RTX 4060 GPU (8GB VRAM) as dGPU. 32GB of RAM.
Using the official Proton 9.0.4 here, but the issue also exists on Proton-GE versions 9.27 and GE 10.10. I did make sure to delete the compatdata and shadercache dirs at every switch.

Second, as your issue happens several hours into the game you should try and share a save file, so others can attempt to reproduce the issue locally. Third, GE proton is a third party fork, when creating issues in this repository you should switch to an upstream proton version (ideally experimental)

I can reliably reproduce a severe rhythmic freeze/stutter in Horizon Forbidden West on Linux/NVIDIA.

Symptoms

The game launches successfully, but stutters rhythmically from the Sony / Nixxes logos onward.

Observed pattern:

  • frozen
  • extremely smooth for ~0.5 seconds
  • frozen again

This continues in the main menu and in-game.

The issue happens before gameplay starts, already during the startup logos.

Performance / telemetry observations

  • GPU usage is usually near 0%, with only brief spikes.
  • During frametime spikes, CPU usage increases, often on a single core.
  • In some tests, both CPU and GPU are mostly idle during the frozen periods.
  • This does not look like normal GPU saturation or VRAM exhaustion.

What I tested already

  • Wayland and X11: same behavior
  • External HDMI display: same behavior
  • Gamescope: same behavior
  • Steam Input disabled: no change
  • Bluetooth off / external HID devices disconnected / KDE Connect disabled: no change
  • Multiple NVIDIA branches: same issue on 580xx and newer driver branch
  • Prefix rebuilt: no meaningful change
  • Shader cache rebuilt: no meaningful change
  • GE-Proton and regular Proton: same issue
  • PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1: changes behavior slightly, but does not fix it
  • PROTON_DISABLE_NTSYNC=1: changes timing slightly, but does not fix it
  • VKD3D_DISABLE_EXTENSIONS=VK_KHR_present_id,VK_KHR_present_wait: no fix
  • PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=0: no fix
  • __GL_MaxFramesAllowed=1, VKD3D_CONFIG=single_queue, VKD3D_FRAME_RATE=60: no fix

Notable log findings

The Proton log repeatedly reports:

d3d12_command_allocator_Reset: There are still 1 pending command lists awaiting execution

I also saw log lines indicating:

  • Could not allocate an out of band queue
  • Enabling global submission mutex workaround

Debugging notes

  • top -H showed AsyncPsoQueue:* threads near the top.
  • gdb backtrace showed many threads waiting in Wine wait paths / NtWaitForSingleObject().
  • strace showed many futex(...) waits and NTSYNC_IOC_WAIT_ANY/WAIT_ALL calls with repeated timeouts.
  • Disabling fsync/esync reduced the obvious single-core busy-waiting, but the freeze/smooth/freeze pattern remained.

Reproduction

  1. Install Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition
  2. Launch on this system via Proton
  3. Wait through the Sony / Nixxes startup logos
  4. Observe repeated freeze -> brief smoothness -> freeze behavior before the main menu and afterward

I am experiencing severe GPU underutilization and CPU overhead in both Horizon Forbidden West and Death Stranding 2 (Decima Engine).

Hardware & Environment:

CPU: Intel Core i9-14900KS

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 (Driver: 595.58.03)

RAM: 32GB DDR5 (XMP Enabled)

OS: Fedora 43 (also tested on CachyOS) / KDE Plasma on Wayland

Proton: Proton-GE / Proton-CachyOS / Proton-exp

Symptoms:

GPU usage is heavily bottlenecked, sitting at around 60% and drawing only ~120W-130W.

Framerate struggles around 60-80 FPS with terrible frametime spikes (stuttering) during traversal.

The "Sky Test": If I look straight up at the sky (removing geometry and draw calls), FPS instantly shoots up to 110-140+ but gpu is still GPU is still halfway used

Dropping all in-game graphical settings to "Low" yields absolutely zero FPS improvement, confirming a hard CPU/VKD3D translation bottleneck, not a GPU limitation.

Windows performance on the exact same machine is flawless.

Attempted Workarounds (None of these helped):

Physically disabled DirectStorage by renaming dstorage.dll and dstoragecore.dll.

Forced audio buffer via pw-metadata -n settings 0 clock.force-quantum 50.

Tested various VKD3D flags (VKD3D_DISABLE_EXTENSIONS=VK_EXT_descriptor_buffer, VKD3D_CONFIG=no_upload_hvv).

Disabled E-Cores and toggled Hyper-Threading in BIOS.

Disabled second monitor to rule out XWayland V-Sync issues, and forced vblank_mode=0.

Disabled DLSS Frame Generation and Nvidia Reflex.

Symptoms

Stutter from the moment "Sony Entertainment" gets rendered on screen. The GPU appears to just not leave its low powered state, clocks do not exceed 400 Mhz, power state remains P5 or P8.

Reproduction

  1. Install Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition
  2. Launch on this system via Proton
  3. Observe repeated freeze -> brief smoothness -> freeze behavior the very moment anything renders on screen to the main menu

Experiencing the exact same issue of freezing every ~0.5 seconds on a Lenovo Legion 5 Pro laptop (RTX 4060, Ryzen 7 7745HX). Happens on both CachyOS and Bazzite, I tried practically every fix suggested online and nothing worked. Absolutely insane that this has been mentioned for over a year and nobody still has ANY idea why it's happening or how to fix it.

I fixed this with increase the clock's "force quantum" setting with

pw-metadata -n settings 0 clock.force-quantum 250

I saw above that 50 had worked for someone else but for me even up to 100 was still choppy, but 200 seems pretty good. This appears to be overriding the pulse audio buffer size but I don't know anything about it.

For the sake of trying to improve search results (it took me a while to find this post) I'm going to thank you.

Even 2 years later and 2 proton major versions this is still an issue with Pascal GPUs. In my case nvidia 1080, drivers 580, kernel 6.18. In Deaths Door, after the fight with Erik and being on the water, when diving the game freeze.

Putting that command fix it completely.
