Symptoms

While the game is playable I have encountered two problems, that keyboard inputs are not registered and that some icons are missing.

Reproduction

Regarding the keyboard input problem. Keyboard inputs are not registered at any point in the game. However, looking at protondb and other sites it appears this issue is only experienced by a minority of linux users. Reproduction instructions for me are to load the game, start a match, and attempt to use any hotkey. Observe that the hotkey does not function (but using the mouse does). Similar issues can be observed on the main menu as the escape key does not correctly close menus.

To observe missing icons, start the game, click the tech tree button on the top menu, and click on any Atlantean god, there should be some blank squares on the right hand side of the screen. This issue appears to observed by a majority (all?) linux users.

I've taken a scan through the logs, but can't see anything immediately obvious regarding either of these issues, although there does seem to be a large number of errors.

AArkanosis 2024-08-28 github

I thought I did not have the missing icons problem, but that was because not all civs / gods are equally impacted. For Poseidon for example, you have to scroll right to see a missing icon, whereas with Kronos, that's indeed very visible.

Here's what the missing icons look like:
missing_icons

I'm using a Radeon RX 6600 with the AMDGPU driver (Mesa 24.1.6), X11 (Xorg 21.1.13) and Proton 9.0-2.

Hello everyone,
I was able to play the beta without any major problems. Now the game is playable in advanced access and I can no longer start it.
(After the small window (splash.bmp) only black appears in full screen and the application stops instead of the loading image)
How do I report the problem correctly?

AArkanosis 2024-08-29 github

Hi @GetGetgamer
Please share your system information (see how SWarrener did in the first message of this issue for a good example).

I was able to fix the keyboard input issue by running the game through gamescope, instead of natively running through wayland. I've attached the log for the most recent session here (where my keyboard input works correctly) in case it proves useful.

When I start the game it launches into a blackscreen, the cursor changes and the music plays.
Moving the mouse around I can hear faint clicking, like it moves over a menu button like in the original.

The game runs out the box with Proton Experimental.

Nvidia 535.xxx and Ubuntu 24.04.

Only bug have encountered is that certain tooltips are not visible, but can still be interacted with.

Not tried multiplayer yet, but skirmish and campaign works fine.

I have a 3080, but the difference is that you are using a really old driver at this point, 470 Vs 535.

Probably worth mentioning that Proton 8.0 and newer requires that the video driver provides Vulkan 1.3. The NVIDIA 470 driver series provides Vulkan 1.2, and is too old for ongoing support.

Another issue reported by u/Sarkani on Reddit, is that Xbox Network Sign In doesn't work (it's useful to setup a clan tag).

I can reproduce the issue and it looks like when clicking on the sign in button, the game tries to launch another program (TestWebClient.exe), which seems to be a .NET app that immediately crashes because it's missing a dll (WebView2Loader.dll). A quick search for this dll suggests it's part of the Microsoft Edge web browser.

Hello , Mouse Sluttering heavily when you move it to another location , i think it's wayland related , hopefully someone with more experience can explain whats happening , it's running good but the mouse slutter heavily and there's some missing icons texture etc etc .

Update: The Issues is wayland related , it's working fine on X11 .

the issue is not Present in Age Of Empire 3 DE which uses the same engine as AoM , for whatever reason AoM on wayland is not working .

I had the same issue. Ubuntu with intel i7 and integrated graphics. I think it's related to the intel integrated graphics as it's the only gpu I've seen experiencing the problem. Downgrading to Proton 7.0-6 fixed the missing text for me. I also have "%command%" in the launch options.

I've downgraded my Nvidia driver to 535 and 470 and neither seems to clear up the blackscreen issue for me on Pop_OS 22.04 .

EEvent-Horizon 2024-09-06 github

I got Age of Empires 4 to work via PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% , though its performance is subpar. Not sure if these share the same engine. It did have the same black screen issue so I believe this is direct-x related.

I saw some posts for Steamdeck stating Proton 9.0.5 works for them on the beta OS version for Steamdeck for Age of Mythology Retold. How would I test that on my Pop_OS 22.04 flatpak install of Steam?

I attempted using Proton GE 9.13 and have the same issue there as well.

I saw a post on AOE4 ProtonDB about using 6.3-8 to bypass black screen.
So for AOMR I tried Proton 6.3-8, this allowed the game to work on Nvidia driver 555 but prompts "Unknown GPU vendor" and works.
After this 7.0-6 worked for some reason though it has the same error popup, then runs fine after. (I'm shocked because I tried before and it didn't work)
Tried 8.0-5 after and this also worked.
Tried 9.0-2 and not working again.

Every working version does give the "Unknown GPU vendor" error though.

However, ray tracing is not available in game (it's greyed out in game options) - does anyone know how to get ray tracing working?

AArkanosis 2024-09-07 github

I was thinking maybe I can forcefully select a GPU with proton.

I suspect you could use VKD3D_FILTER_DEVICE_NAME (for DirectX 12 emulation) or DXVK_FILTER_DEVICE_NAME (for DirectX 11 and below emulation) to explicitly select an non-default GPU, eg:

VKD3D_FILTER_DEVICE_NAME="RTX 3060 Ti" %command%

or

DXVK_FILTER_DEVICE_NAME="RTX 3060 Ti" %command%

as a startup option. That being said, you shouldn't have to, as the discrete GPU (the RTX 3060 Ti) should be the default.

Could it be that you don't have an ICD for your NVIDIA GPU? Could you list the content of /usr/share/vulkan/icd.d?

Also I have zero clue on what the LLVM things is.

LLVMpipe is a software driver that you can use for Vulkan (through Lavapipe); that's definitely not the “GPU” you want to use (as it would actually use your CPU).

AArkanosis 2024-09-07 github

I got Age of Empires 4 to work via PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% , though its performance is subpar.

This option switches from the newer Vulkan-based implementation of DirectX to the older OpenGL-based implementation. It's never going to give the same performance as when using the Vulkan-based implementation. Most people will probably want to stay away from this option, unless they use an old GPU.

Now, the fact that it works with the option and doesn't work without it shows that the issue is most likely related to Vulkan: either your GPU doesn't support the minimum required version of Vulkan, or your GPU driver is too old (NVIDIA 470 is too old, for example).

Could you share what GPU you're using?

Proton 9.0.5 […] Proton GE 9.13 […] Proton 6.3-8 […] 7.0-6 […] 9.0-2

When using Vulkan, the default, stable release of Proton (ie. Proton 9.0-2) should work just fine, unless your GPU (or GPU driver) doesn't support Vulkan 1.3. For GPUs that don't support Vulkan 1.3 but support Vulkan 1.2, Proton 7.0-6 is the latest release you can use. For GPUs that don't support Vulkan 1.2, or when Proton 7.0-6 is too old to run a game, using PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% can help but performance won't be as good.

Just as an interesting note, the file does actually exist in the game install. If you look at <gameroot>/runtimes/win-x64/native/ you'll fine that exact file there. Interesting to note, Warhammer 40000: Darktide seemed to have some kind of problem with it mentioned here.

Has anyone had any luck with the icons yet? I noticed that the proton version has an impact on this. My Steam install defaulted the game to proton 6.3-8 (I need to fix that lol) on first install and all of the legacy pack icons were missing. After setting it to Proton-GE 9.11 (and now 9.13) the vast majority are visible with only the few shown above missing. I can't quite seem to track down why they don't appear. I'm on an AMD GPU if it matters.

DDuality4Y 2024-09-13 github

I got the game to run (incredibly good) here is the following that I did:
I reinstalled my pc, I installed Manjaro (to be closer to newer packages)
Then installed steam, Downloaded the game, enabled compatibility, only got it to work with proton 7
any other proton gave me a black screen with music playing in the background.

I am running X11 at the moment, my install of Manjaro (with KDE theme) also has an option for Wayland which you can choose from the login, it could make debugging things easier as you can easily switch between Wayland and X11.

My Graphics drivers work really bad in Wayland is what I have noticed.

Edit it works with proton 8 too in my case, it gave the "graphics card" popup but after clicking I did not notice a decrease in performance in respect to Proton7

Experimental and Proton9 still give a black screen (didn't say my gpu was untested) with music playing in the background.

DDuality4Y 2024-09-13 github

What I can't get my head around is why other people with similair systems like Wayland/X11 get it to work on one or the other, or have it work with different kinds of proton version.

DDuality4Y 2024-09-13 github

tried running in Wayland with Proton7, it works it does give the untested gpu popup but after it works really well.
I did a benchmark in the game and the performance is slightly lower.

Running with Proton8 on wayland works, it also gives the untested GPU popup but then after runs fine,
running a bench mark reveals that the performances is lower then proton7 in wayland.

Running with Proton9 on wayland does not work and gives the following error:

Running Experimental on wayland gives exactly the same results as running Proton9 in wayland.

are you running nvidia or amd gpu ?

cause my game runs on wayland but with sluttering , i feel this is mostly due to an nvidia driver and explicit sync .

EEliasDadde 2024-09-14 github

i have no idea how you guys make it work on wayland , i tried many different possibilities , different kernel different nvidia drivers , different proton version , all results in the same weird behavior , the mouse freezes for a second when u move it , kind of mouse sluttering , fps in untouched its stable 144 , however the mouse behavior makes the game unplayable on wayland , Age Of Empire 3:DE does have the same behavior , X11 works perfectly fine , not sure whats happening with wayland and the games and i dont have amd card to test it , i can still do one test , is using the mesa nvk driver , instead of nvidia one to see if things are different .

EEliasDadde 2024-09-14 github

ok i traced the issue what's causing the mouse freeze , it's related to kwin compositor with nvidia explicit sync , after trying everything i thought of installing gnome and as i expected it's from the kde kwin compositor , will report a bug for the kde devs .

EEoin-ONeill-Yokai 2024-09-21 github

Mine is working on sway, but I need to move it to the first workspace as otherwise the screen will stutter and move to the upper left.

So mouse stuttering might also be caused by camera problems due to inaccurate mouse position values compared to, say, Windows.

So I forced device 0 and Gamescope like so, where the game complains about not tested and supported GPU, as screens above from @fenvarien. People on protondb reported it worked fine with 550 drivers, so I guess the game simply hasn't been patched for the latest Nvidia drivers yet.

VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/nvidia_icd.json VK_DEVICE_SELECT=0 gamescope -W 3440 -H 1440 -b -f --force-grab-cursor -- %command%

And all runs fine on nearly max settings on 2560x1080, ~55 fps in the crazy benchmark, without the gamescope, it would be around ~45 fps for some reason, but I tested only slightly so far.

Ubuntu 25.04 - Wayland - Graphic card AMD with officiel drivers installed - Proton experimental.

The game is not playable because the UI of gnome is over it! 😅

I also experience this with Ubuntu 25.04, X11, and Nvidia 575 drivers. Happens on Proton 9 and 10.

I can workaround it by setting the game to windowed mode.

Age of Mythology Retold (1934680)

Issue transferred from https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/9110.
@patwre posted on 2025-10-17T05:59:40:

Compatibility Report

  • Age of Mythology Retold
  • Steam AppID of the game: 1934680

System Information

  • GPU:
NVIDIA Corporation AD107 [GeForce RTX 4060] (rev a)
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Raphael (rev c7)

  • Video driver version: NVIDIA-SMI 580.82.09

  • Kernel version: 6.14.0-33-generic

  • Proton version: All of them were tested

I confirm:

  • [ ] that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • [ ] that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Symptoms

I could play the game perfectly fine right before the new Patch. Ever since the game update I have been having compatibility issues. At first i was getting a D3D12 error, but now I cannot even start the game.

Reproduction

I have tried every proton version but there is no response. I have forced steam and the game to "see" only my NVIDIA gpu and did several updates but nothing has changed.

Hello @patwre, please add PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to the game's launch options and attach the generated $HOME/steam-$APPID.log to this issue report as a file. (Proton logs compress well if needed.) Also, please copy the contents of Steam Runtime Diagnostics from Steam (Steam -> Help -> Steam Runtime Diagnostics) and put it in a gist, then include a link to the gist in this issue report.

If you completely close Steam, then run steam from a terminal, does that have an effect? https://gist.github.com/patwre/0b750fcec20703b5f322644f6f7193ef#file-gistfile1-txt-L263-L283 and https://gist.github.com/patwre/0b750fcec20703b5f322644f6f7193ef#file-gistfile1-txt-L76 makes me suspect something similar to https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/8179 is happening where the AMD graphics is trying to render to the user session running on the NVIDIA proprietary driver and it's having a hard time. Also, -dx11 in the header of the Proton log implies you have that in the game's launch options. Does removing that bring the D3D12 message back and can you collect a Proton log where you see that message?

steam-1934680.log.gz Here is the file where I had only the log command written the [PROTON_LOG=1 %command%]. I tried to run it from the terminal but the game won't load. It is 100% a gpu issue since the game seems to be loading when using Hotfix or even Experimental but I only see a black screen while I can hear the game music and I can blindly click stuff.

Edit: I tried to find a way through using AI because I am new to Linux and it mentioned the following
"From the logs and your setup:

Your RTX 4060 is detected correctly by Vulkan.

Proton cannot convince the game’s internal GPU check to accept NVIDIA because it sees multiple GPUs (dual GPU hybrid setup).

This is why black screen / “unknown GPU vendor” persists no matter X11, GE-Proton9-10, or launch variables.

So, under Ubuntu 25.04 on your dual GPU system, AoM Retold is currently not playable via Proton/DX12 due to the game’s internal checks."

Is this information correct? @kisak-valve

Edit 2: I solved the Issue by changing Auto Detect Discrete Display to "Enabled" and iGPU COnfiguration to "Disabled" From the Bios. It seemed that before that AoM would try to read the wrong GPU even though I tried to force to read the Nvidia.
I hope this helps all future dual graphics card AoM players

Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou.
Disabling the iGPU on my 9800X3D + RTX 4080 Super machine in the Bios worked, tried everything else first.
