@cleka010 in what parts of the game do you see it happening more often?

Ccleka010 2025-09-15 github

Basically, it hangs in the online modes "THE PARK." At the beginning of matches between players on the courts, there is a significant drop in FPS down to 15, which usually lasts a few seconds, up to 15 seconds, and then the framerate goes back to 60 FPS ( all is moving in fast camera) until it works fine. However, at other times, it completely hangs.

The game also hangs quite a bit in the "Play Next Game" mode in "My Career" during the scenes just before starting the NBA matches.

Sometimes it is solved temporarily by resetting the shaders and the game's temporary files... but in the long run, it starts giving problems again.

@simifor are you a proton/wine developer or just a nba2k fan? mmm

Ssimifor 2025-09-16 github

@cleka010 I help with testing. So far I've mostly tested on rdna4 and no hangs on my end yet.
Some things that would help is knowing roughly how often (in either tries or time) it takes to hang in particular modes.

  1. When you mention scenes that play before nba matches in mycareer, do you mean the videos that advance the story line?
  2. What graphics settings are you using? Have you tried to see if low settings make a difference?
  3. Have you tried proton 10? Does it also hang?

1. When you mention scenes that play before nba matches in mycareer, do you mean the videos that advance the story line?

3. Have you tried proton 10? Does it also hang?
  1. Just after the shooting training, you have to start each match by quickly pressing B after passing the screen.
  2. Hight quality defauts, only change NPC DENSITY to LOW, yes same thing with LOW.
  3. I avoid making proton version changes as much as possible to prevent issues with Denuvo. Last year, they blocked my game for this reason for a month, and I don't want to take the risk.

Basically, it only happens after downloading shaders and compiling them. Before starting online matches in the park, it slows down to 14 or 15 fps for 5 or 10 seconds, and if it doesn't freeze, it runs like in fast motion for a few moments until the game stabilizes. Then the following matches run fine, but if I change modes, for example, to REC, it happens again.

Sometimes it doesn't continue, and the game completely freezes, giving a connection error to the 2K server.

Seems a shader problem with online modes , I can't explain better :)

NVIDIA Ampere here, hitting the same VCMain / RenderThread freeze pattern as the AMD report above. Adding cross-vendor data since this thread had been AMD-only.

System:

  • RTX 3070 Ti, NVIDIA driver 580.142
  • Nobara 43 (Fedora-based), Linux 6.19.11
  • Proton Experimental and Proton 11.0.0 (beta) — both freeze
  • KDE Plasma 6 Wayland

Symptoms:
Hard freeze during loading screens / pre-match cinematics. Game process stuck in futex_ wait, all Gfx* threads in ntsync. Kernel log shows NVRM: Xid (PCI:0000:01:00): 109, name=RenderThread, errorString CTX SWITCH TIMEOUT or Xid 32 (push buffer corruption) at the moment of the freeze.

Driver version note: Started on driver 595.58.03, which has an independent Xid 109 regression affecting unrelated games (Crimson Desert, Bannerlord War Sails — see this NVIDIA forum thread). Downgrading to 580.142 cleared most Xid 109s but didn't eliminate them — they still fire occasionally on 580.142, alongside Xid 32 in the same RenderThread. So the 595.x bug compounds with this issue but isn't the underlying cause.

Things that didn't help (saving others time):

  • VideoSettings.cfg CPU thread reduction (4/8 from 6/12)
  • Locking GPU graphics + memory clocks at max P0 via nvidia-smi -lgc/-lmc
  • Disabling NVIDIA GSP firmware (NVreg_EnableGpuFirmware=0)
  • PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 DXVK_ASYNC=1
  • VKD3D_CONFIG=no_upload_hvv,force_static_cbv
  • Driver downgrade 595.58.03 → 580.142 (helps but doesn't fix)
  • Switching from Proton Experimental → Proton 11.0.0 (beta)

The cross-vendor, cross-Proton-version, cross-driver pattern points to vkd3d-proton's handling of NBA 2K26's D3D12 call sequences during heavy load (loading screens, pre-match scenes) rather than any single driver or Proton version.

MMoritz-Ptk 2026-05-13 github

Similar as post above, NVIDIA Ampere, having the same VCMain / RenderThread freeze pattern as the AMD system OP.

System:

RTX 3060, NVIDIA driver 580.142
Ubuntu 26.04
Proton Experimental, Proton 11.0.0 (beta) and Proton 10.4 all regularly freeze during loading screens or cutscenes.

Qqwrdz 2026-06-02 github

been trying to get NBA 2K26 working on Linux for a while now and it's been a rough ride. the game freezes indefinitely in career mode, play now, and basically any loading transition. sometimes it recovers after a minute or two, sometimes it's permanent and needs a hard kill.
dmesg shows the same pattern every time before the freeze:

umip: VCMain[pid] ip:... SGDT instruction cannot be used by applications.
umip: VCMain[pid] ip:... For now, expensive software emulation returns the result.
...
NVRM: Xid (PCI:0000:01:00): 109, pid=..., name=RenderThread, errorString CTX SWITCH TIMEOUT

the SGDT/SMSW emulation runs for several minutes, spikes CPU overhead, and eventually the GPU render thread times out waiting for resources that've been eaten up by the emulation. tried clearcpuid=514 as a kernel parameter to disable UMIP — didn't help.
Setup:

Distro: NixOS 25.11
Kernel: 6.12.85
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800H
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti Mobile (PRIME offload, Flatpak Steam)
Driver: 580.142
Proton: GE-Proton10-34 (also tested Proton Experimental — same behaviour)

Tried:

XAudio2 DLL overrides (xaudio2_0 through xaudio2_9)
DXVK async
Reduced DXVK VRAM budget
CPU power limiting via ryzenadj
clearcpuid=514 to disable UMIP
Multiple Proton versions
Everything listed in this issue

nothing resolves the indefinite freeze. would love to know if there's a Proton-side fix in the works for the SGDT/SMSW handling or the XAudio2 issue.
