Compatibility Report

  • Name of the game with compatibility issues: Roboquest VR
  • Steam AppID of the game: 3151760

System Information

I confirm:

  • [X] that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • [X] that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Symptoms

Using the official Steam Link via SteamVR 2.13.7, when the game starts, it starts playing some music and the monitor screen goes blank, but SteamVR freezes/crashes and the client says the server is not responding. Then I have to force-quit the game and it often crashes Steam.

This also happens if I play the game via ALVR (another streaming software that couples itself to SteamVR).

It doesn't happen with WiVRn, which provides a separate openxr and openvr (xrizer) backends. The game starts normally.

Reproduction

Just get in VR with SteamVR and press play on the game.

Proton log

I am attaching two logs:

  1. regular log with PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
  2. VR-focused log with PROTON_LOG=+vrclient,+openxr,+file %command%

I was wrong -- it is not working with WiVRn. I must have tried with an earlier patch. Now when I try to run it with WiVRn sometimes it even hangs the driver, to the point that I have to reboot with REISUB.

In case it proves useful, here is the proton log (regular PROTON_LOG=1) with WiVRn.

BTW, tried with Proton 9.0-3 and Proton Experimental (removing the prefix between attempts) - same issues

+1

Launching the game with WiVRN for me "works", but only for a minute as most, before the game crashes, also crashing my GPU driver as it crashes, but not bad enough to crash my desktop. If I try to lower the resolution in WiVRN, even launching the game will fully crash the GPU driver AND desktop (ring 0 gfx reset in journald).

Also attempted with ALVR, which while it technically doesn't crash, it will not stream to the headset but for sound. You cannot control nor interact with the game; I bet even if I could control or see the game it would likely crash all the same as it does with WiVRN.

Bazzite 42 (have yet to update to 43 due to SDDM race-condition bug), does not matter the proton version, AMD RX7900XT

Maybe this is a bug report that should go to the amdgpu drivers instead? Please advise.

I think that I will try this game on an NVIDIA.

PPatola 2025-11-25 github

I confirm that the game works on an NVIDIA RTX 3070 with WiVRn (although with terrible reprojection). I have to make more tests but I'm very busy these days. Will also try with ALVR and of course Steam Link.

PPatola 2025-11-25 github

Made a new test on Plasma under X11 (I was on Wayland) -- the issue does NOT happen in X11 and the game runs perfectly. So this issue is for Wayland only.

PPatola 2025-11-26 github

I've recorded some gameplay -- 25 minutes -- on Xorg, with WiVRn. On exit, the game crashed wlx-overlay-s or some other wivrn component, but it doesn't seem it was the driver (no amdgpu errors on dmesg).

Still, there are some things that are worthwhile to note. The game seems to start with really heavy reprojection, then settles to smooth gameplay. Also there's a lot of pop-in. As I've scoured the forums, it seems that even on Windows this game is really unstable and prone to issues, so it might not be something on the proton/mesa/linux side.

This is the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiWi_5Er2eQ -- if it's considered "unsupported" due to wivrn I can record another one via steam link.

(Now, I make these technical gameplay videos because of some strange phenomenon -- some people refuse to believe it's being run on Linux, or that Linux can do VR at all -- and it just happens that I acquired a taste for doing that and have been keeping up with a different game every day).

Note: I'm short on time and reporting a bug on mesa -- which I will mention here when I do -- is much more involved than a proton bug. Suggestions on tools to help with the details are welcome. I am thinking of using UMR.

CCoderRuq 2025-12-10 github

Redownloaded the game to try again after a few patches, and it still immediately crashes, causing ring_gfx_0 resets. I'm on Bazzite so I don't have Xorg as an option, so it definitely seems to be a Wayland/Mesa issue.

There are more faults than the one, but they all appear the same save for varying memory addresses.

What's interesting is I can't get the game to connect to the headset when using ALVR (WiVRN works but after a couple of frames the game insta-crashes)...but it does display on my monitor, which DOESN'T crash the game or my GPU.

Rejoice! On my AMD Wayland system I got it working, with Steam Link VR! No Mesa update required!

It still has minor issues, like occasional graphics clipping in the environment (not super noticeable), or loading scenes not showing leaving a black screen with occasional pop-in of the load screen (not sure why).

Important question -- did you update your mesa drivers to 25.3.1? A number of new bugs appeared there, so I'm still using 25.2.7. If you updated to 25.3.1 maybe this version solves the driver errors.

being on Bazzite, I believe I am on 25.3.1, and it works with Steam Link VR

Also seeing this with a wired headset (Bigscreen Beyond) and a RX 7800XT. Crashes on Wayland and X11, Mesa 25.2.7 and Mesa 25.3.1 for me, with the same gpu reset/page fault as posted above.

The problem does not happen anymore with mesa 25.3.2 on Wayland and the game runs much better now too.

Interestingly I do still see the gpu reset, but only on Monado. It's fine on SteamVR.
