The "launch window" opens, and it'll say "running" in the library menu. but then the window closes and it stops "running". It never launches.

Heres the output from the terminal: https://bpaste.net/show/a7e521ab04d0

Heres system information from Steam Help: https://gist.github.com/VERTlG0/cd18530e987cbf5cdf4b35f82e71c8f5

Heres Proton log: https://bpaste.net/show/a425ee30f31f

From a couple of those steam play websites ive been to it appears no one could get it working so I dont expect a solution anytime soon. Figured I would just post this Issue so its documented, and to save the next user a couple minutes from having to post it themselves.

RRetalak 2018-08-31 github

It's because of the way Ubisoft has implemented BattleEye and the Uplay app. No one has been able to get Siege to work in Wine, but maybe Valve can. Or maybe they can talk Ubisoft into making a compatibility patch for Proton.

Rrayslava 2018-08-31 github

If there's BattleEye port to Proton, many games will become available. E.g. Planetside 2 doesn't work because of this issue.
But still I doubt it's possible to implement this support in a reasonable time.

Epic said EAC working to support wine but that day hasnt come yet..

AAKoskovich 2020-01-05 github

Its the EAC problem. EAC is included in Fortnite Apex, Paladins, PUBG and many more games... EAC is the problem we can pass BattleEye. @rayslava

EAC doesn't exist in Rainbow Six Siege...

Not BattleEye problem you can by pass it...

Oh? Please do tell.

I just got back a reply from Battleye support

Dear Jatin,
Currently we do not officially support Wine, but we are working with Valve to add support for Proton (SteamPlay) on Steam.

Your BattlEye Support Team

They just exactly copy pasted same thing they said in may of 2019 XD

LLaynezilla 2020-02-02 github

I wonder if this will have any effect.

AAKoskovich 2020-02-02 github

I wonder if this will have any effect.

Why would it? R6 still uses BattleEye, Vulkan doesn't change that. Although it is a much welcomed addition to Siege that gives a MAJOR performance increase on my hardware (Windows 10).

Anyways I have an installer for current day Siege (doesn't work obviously) and I've tried the Vulkan one and it still just hangs on running, unfortunately.

They may just not want to or be able to provide much info.

Tthomhoess 2020-04-30 github

@jatin-cbs Yeah, they're probably working on it, but won't give an ETA because the compatibility tweaks are done when they're done, i don't think they exactly know how much stuff is left to be fixed, one after another.

Still crashes on Proton 5.0-7

Kernel: Linux 5.4.0-28-generic x86_64
OS: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
CPU: Ryzen 3 1300x
GPU: Geforce GTX 1050 Ti
RAM: 8GB DDR4

Steam Version: May 1st build

Normal (not vulkan) crash log: https://pastebin.com/YFmNmS0f

Think it must be BattlEye (uplay works fine for watch_dogs 2) but possibly Uplay too

I've heard of a patch to get it working by disabling BattlEye and a UPlay workaround but kinda pointless the game is multiplayer and situations are just tutorials essentially.

Thanks

IIRC R6 launches through BattleEye so there's no way in hell it will launch on Linux.

@ZVNexus hopefully BattlEye support is added soon then. stuff like PUBG and R6S are probably keeping a lot of players on Win10. Also EAC for games like HALO and Rust. Big task though to deal w/ tho.

I agree, would be nice to have a way around invasive anti-cheats running at ring 0 though, fuck that shit. Have to have a dedicated rig for that or don't play the games at all or just deal with it.

On Steamdeck FAQ - We’re working with BattlEye and EAC to get support for Proton ahead of launch.

Also I am testing patches from upstream proton and testing with latest Proton GE versions https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom as GE updates wine to the latest upstream version. So once I get any progress I will update it here but probably y'all nerds will know :)

EAC and BattlEye support has been officially confirmed for Steam Deck (Proton). I feel this expectionally great news will turn the tables for this issue and many others alike.

The only issue being that we'll have to get Ubisoft to check the "enable proton" box on their end, and we know how studios like theirs can be.

Mmarkkuit 2021-09-25 github

That is very true, but with the marketing happening around the device and thus devs wanting a piece of the money cake, I am fairly confident we'll see changes happening in reasonable time. I hope this doesn't age poorly (guess we all do).

EAC and BattlEye support has been officially confirmed for Steam Deck (Proton)

They weren't confirmed, they told that they're working on it. EAC should be ported on Linux now, but we don't have any guarantee that:

  • BattleEye will be ported before Steam Deck release
  • It will be updated in R6: Siege by Ubisoft

Yes hoping for ubisoft to click 2 times and we good to go !

Most likely it's more complicated than clicking the checkbox. I'd guess that they need to get updated version of anti-cheat libraries or sources, then if it has some BC breaks update the game code or if not just thoroughly test it before just "clicking the checkbox".

So don't wait for Ubisoft to do that in a second.

Tried Siege w/Proton and gotta say it works fine but does have some issues, one is that input is messed can't change any keybinds or sometimes will stick on a key(this one I gotta check again since it could be my keyboard) Multiplayer games work fine, now I am having issues after 3 matches 2 days ago and its not letting me into one without kicking me. If you tab out, you will mess up Siege to where its a black screen and you have to restart the game. Other than that it was pretty good.

Vulkan version did work, and same to say about DX version. Both have pretty similar performance.

SSaladin1812 2021-11-10 github

Ya after getting into quickplay game it does kick out and for the black screen issue change the display to borderless @MilkJug1 . Also steam saying me to add the cd key but steam CD key activation copy paste is broken. Steam won't let you copy or increase the window size to (see the whole key) when it allows to re scale every other window for some reason "_"

I can get the game to start when disabling dxvk, but I only get to the loading screen where it says "updating security measures" and later it crashes. Maybe they changed something with BattleEye?

I too had the same experience with Vulkan version once. Now all the versions crash (both versions have a weird splash window loop after Ubi Connect)

Sskobkin 2023-01-30 github

it says "updating security measures" and later it crashes. Maybe they changed something with BattleEye? That could be a good sign.

Some time ago Ubisoft announced that they'll implement new anti-cheat measures which will be updated even between game updates in Steam and Uplay. So technically the same goes on Windows.

  • Game starts
  • Downloads something for their new anti-cheat measures
  • Game closes
  • Game starts again

So either you didn't wait enough for the game to restart, or it did really crash somewhere on downloading or just couldn't restart properly.

One of possible explanations can be found here:

A rumor about the secret workings of Ubisoft's latest Rainbow Six Siege anti-cheat system has begun to give the new tactic a heroic aura on the internet. The claim going around on Twitter(opens in new tab) is that Ubisoft is doing something deviously simple: updating the Rainbow Six Siege executable every two hours, forcing cheat makers to keep up with an endless treadmill of cheat-breaking changes.

One poster on that cheat maker's forum describes the system differently, however. Ubisoft isn't sending every Siege player a new executable every two hours, they say, but instead created a bunch of unique executables a few weeks ago and has started distributing them to players randomly.

Ppotatogod3000 2023-01-30 github

Some time ago Ubisoft announced that they'll implement new anti-cheat measures which will be updated even between game updates in Steam and Uplay. So technically the same goes on Windows.

Yeah I remember reading an article last year on this topic.

So this is the case then. The game crashes when downloading the executable or something.. If you see the attached log here, there are a few lines like:
warn:debugstr:OutputDebugStringA "D:\\JenkinsWorkspace\\workspace\\client_build_installer\\client\\shared\\libs\\biz\\misc\\mg\\biz\\misc\\JobHttp.cpp(168) : Http status code is 404 for url https://public-ubiservices.ubi.com/v2/profiles/bd87abee-91c3-426f-b877-5f0d1243985a/club/progression/title?locale=en&spaceId=0d2ae42d-4"....

Dderkrasseleo 2023-01-30 github

So either you didn't wait enough for the game to restart, or it did really crash somewhere on downloading or just couldn't restart properly.

I now waited for the game to crash, and it actually started itself again. It seems to be stuck in an endless loop though (I waited 5 restarts)

FYI: I actually have R6 on a separate partition, so I can run it on both Windows and Linux (Dualboot) I tried on Windows, and there it seems to work fine, even without restarting.

Jjaperry 2023-02-05 github

When running the debugger I'm not seeing the 404 being reported above, but I am having the game crash after 2 or 3 seconds saying "applying security measures..." -- which is what other people are seeing too. When tailing the log, this appears right before crashing.

What it appears to be doing is fetching the new game exe, which tracks with what others are reporting. However, I think the issue happens when it tries to reload the executable.. it goes into a loop. Maybe its unable to reload its own exe in wine? idk.

Steam still reports the game as running, I assume this is because of Ubisoft Connect. I then close the game using the "Stop" button in Steam.

I've tried some various tweaks and changes by running different versions of Proton, but now the game won't even launch. It now gets stuck in "Launching" state but the game never launches. Even if I revert back to defaults, it get stuck in Launching state. Deleting the game and reinstalling also did nothing.

Also since new Steam Client has been introduced it's introduced new bugs such as games being stuck in Uninstall state where it will stay stuck trying to Uninstall games without actually doing anything. Trying to get Rainbow Six Siege uninstalled just so I could reinstall it was being stuck in this state and wouldn't uninstall. I was forced to manually delete ALL game files from both common and compatdata as well as the app data manifest file and Download Cache directories just to get the Steam Client to be see it as Not Installed.

That's just due to the game trying to run uninstall scripts. You can kill all exe's and wine processes in the background and it'll uninstall the game. Unsure what happens to compatdata.

@SectionTN

so does R6S works now using Steam Proton or no?

It works like before and runs well (if not better in some cases) but the only thing that doesn't work still is online multiplayer (ranked, standard, quick play, etc...).

However, I've managed to play "local" LAN games via tunnels like ZeroTier, both with Linux and Windows clients, and we've got it working with some friends and others and it works flawlessly when playing various games together.

But until Ubisoft enables BattlEye support for Linux (and Proton in particular), we can only play in offline/"LAN" games for the time being. We're hoping they eventually communicate their take on that matter, but it's still radio silence from them as per usual 💀

this issue were created in 2018 or 2017 it took them about 6 years now, i expect nothing from them

Didn't help=( RB6 Extraction works fine tho. I used GE proton 8.25 and compdata from RB6Ext and trackmania, since the original RB6Siege lacks ubisoft connect installer.

Manually copied ubisoft connect installer and installscript.vdf (and a bit rewrote) from extraction. Same story dx11 works, vulkan doesn't.

On first install, choosing Vulkan doesn't work. Using the first option (DirectX) works. Strange that DXVK is doing a better job of translating the calls than native Vulkan...

I think valve doesn't give a damn about this game until we get anticheat enabled. Rainbow Six Extraction which uses the same engine works very well with Vulkan.

I don't doubt it, but the fact that DXVK is doing a better job of translating DX11 to Vulkan calls than the Vulkan calls whatever engine R6 is using is interesting. Though it wouldn't be the first time an engine was writing worse Vulkan calls for Linux than DXVK...

same for me, under a rx 6700, ryzen 3700x with mesa 24.1 devel and kernel 6.8rc7 on endeavour os with plasma 6, i see more gpu util under dxvk then vulkan, a higher overall fps, vulkan was quicker at average render time tho and had a higher min fps

i would take dxvk over vulkan as vulkan caps my fps to my monitor in fullscreen and borderless, probs because of wayland but dxvk doesnt

this was on very high graphics setting preset also

@kwalob
The BattlEye issue is currently a server-side issue now (as far as we know). Ubisoft finally acknowledged the issue here:
https://r6fix.ubi.com/projects/RAINBOW6-SIEGE-LIVE/issues/LIVE-59642
(check pinned comment for Ubisoft response)

Sadly, they're not willing to act on enabling the Battleye Proton toggle that would allow us to use a user-space variant of Battleye developed for Linux and Proton gamers to connect to a game server using Battleye, despite the game running solidly (sometimes better than Windows in some cases).

The main argument they provide being that BattlEye on Linux systems under Proton doesn't run in the kernel level of the host OS, so they can't trust it as much as a Windows variant and thus believe it's enough to not enable it right now.

Not all hope is lost however, since multiplayer does still work for local LAN games so that's still a possibility. We setup a Discord server a while ago for organising "LAN" games via ZeroTier VPN tunnelling so we can still play games together (with both Windows and Linux) and it works perfectly, although most of us are playing XDefiant atm more nowadays since the branch of Ubisoft that develops the game are much more lenient/willing for both platforms.

Ideally, the end-solution should really be not to trust either any Windows/Linux clients at all and run server-side anti-cheat solutions with data-based bans (similar to what Valve do for their games), but that's up to them unfortunately, so we can do not much but hope and pray they realise and enact something that is more accommodating to everyone, regardless of what OS they want to use.

Why was siege added as deck playable with the unsupported anti cheat tag removed?

Ppollux78 2025-03-18 github

players are saying it doesnt work so im wondering also why this change was made? does ubisoft need to change something on their side? or is it marked as playable in terms of you can launch the game and play with bots

i see there is one report from a steamdeck user that was able to play the game online 5 days ago, unsure if linux desktop users can play tho :/

Does not work on desktop Arch, with or without SteamDeck=1 %command% option. Don't have a steam deck, so can't test that. Last files update came 14 days ago, but the re-review happened 12 hours ago. If they did decide to enable support, it might come in the next update? Or maybe their servers are still rolling out the update, who knows.

Or... Valve just goofed and rated it playable without testing for long enough. Sometimes the anticheat lets you play for a minute or so, and I'm guessing the rating employee at Valve might not have known this.

You are an angel. The game launches, and my progress carries over properly while moving from ubisoft connect to steam because I used my online save. I accidentally disabled my ubisoft overlay by editing the settings.yaml file for ubisoft connect.

Edit: Online games do not work, even when i tried PROTON_BATTLEYE_RUNTIME=~/.local/share/lutris/runtime/battleye_runtime/ %command%
Also, cloud saves aren't working at all, on Windows they take several retries but work eventually.
Also, also, closing the game doesn't actually close it in steam's eyes because ubisoft connect is still dwelling in the wine system tray.

However, I can't seem to access the ubisoft connect overlay (no response to shift+f2)

Edit 1: Clicking this button doesn't do anything either.

Edit 2: When I get a party invite, the ' sent you a party invite' popup appears, but clicking it or hitting X does nothing.

Hello Valve or whoever reads this, I'm a linux user and I just want to say that I love playing there but it's a shame that companies like Rockstar Games, EA, Ubisoft suddenly update their anti-cheat and stop supporting linux users, I and many people want to play Rainbow Six Siege (I play on windows since 2015) with a dual boot and because of his damn anti-cheat can not play and linux users we have to fuck us for these things, this kind of thing should not be allowed and should do something about it, if not I wish you could put a solution or contact with such companies, in this case Ubisoft, I am very pissed, thanks for reading me

Sskobkin 2025-06-23 github

Forcing someone to support Linux would be a bit much even for Valve.

Although they can probably stimulate some companies by providing offers like "you support SteamOS, we set lower fee for you" like Epic does for UE.

Aalkaris2 2025-06-23 github

The typical excuse for these big studios and companies is "The user base doesn't exist, therefore we won't support it." which is not only flat out wrong and incorrect, but lack the foresight to see the market is shifting as more people are starting to abandon Windows in preference for Linux because of all the shitty updates Microsoft's continued terrible updates that makes the user experience worse, and integration of AI that screenshots and records everything you do, even if they do try to claim that "nothing personal or sensitive is shared" it doesn't matter in the context of privacy concerns.

Anti-Cheats are rootkits, requesting top level access to the system kernel, which do nothing when cheats will also run on system kernel level circumventing whatever anti-cheat software these studios are using for their games anyway. But cheaters are moving away from software that runs on the same system as the Anti-Cheat software, and moving to custom FPGA DMA Cards connected to a second PC or laptop that interfaces with the games they're trying to cheat in, which these kernel-level anti-cheat software can't detect. The anti-cheat developers need to switch their approach to a more robust system that detects cheats running through DMA Cards with AI based Anti-Cheat solutions, which records your online gameplay for anomalies.

Valve should probably experiment with linux support == -2% from 30% cut.

to make them notice that small benefit.

Iidunnojustletme 2025-06-23 · hidden on GitHub github

It seems like this wouldn't fall afoul of antitrust regulation in the US (or what's left of it). Illegality seems to require that

  1. Steam has a monopoly in games distribution
  2. It is using that monopoly to gain space in other markets in a way that harms competition
  3. There is no pro-competitive justification (There absolutely is)

Frankly, I don't get bad vibes from this. Windows has gotta go.

Guys, we know that Ubisoft can support their games on Proton, but this is not the place to discuss that.
@kisak-valve: CreateFileMapping2 was implemented in Wine 10.9, so I will update you if the game boots with this version.

I have been saying this. Maybe if deck verified == smaller cut from the default 30%. Would incentivise Linux support since most developers won't support a platform that doesn't generate revenue. Might also help get rid of external launchers... I don't remember if that's part of the deck verified program.
