Steam won't open after a system crash

  • Steam client version (build number or date): I don't know, i installed it from sudo apt install steam
  • Distribution (e.g. Ubuntu): 23.10 Kubuntu (Updated from 23.04)
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: No
  • Have you checked for system updates?: Yes
  • Steam Logs: See below
  • GPU: Nvidia RTX 3060

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

My PC suffered a power outage causing it to crash, this corrupted the system files which caused the system to require a manual fsck, after doing that the system booted up normally. But steam wouldn't open, upon opening steam in a terminal this would get logged:

$ steam
Bus error (core dumped)

Things I tried to fix it

  1. Reinstalling steam
  2. Reinstalling all of steams dependencies, recommendations, and suggestions listed on this page: https://packages.debian.org/buster/steam
  3. Restarting my system
  4. Deleting the ~/.steam folder
  5. Reinstalling my Nvidia drivers
  6. Reading the logs
  7. A bunch of other stuff listed below

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Corrupt your system

Update: If I delete a few binary files from ~/.steam/debian-installation/ then I get this popup:

In theory if I delete the whole .steam folder it should work, right?

I fixed it, I just had to delete a few files in the ~/.steam directory (not debian-installation but maybe that could help too)

never mind it updated some stuff but its now crashing again

I went with the semi-nuclear option and deleted everything but ~/.steam/debian-installation/steamapps and I got message:

Clicking on the Restart Steam option causes it crash with the same Bus Error

Completely nuking the ~/.steam folder doesn't fix it either. Here are the full logs

I fixed it! Here is what I did:

  1. Install the debsums package: sudo apt install debsums
  2. You're supposed to run sudo debsums_init but that just gave a command not found, maybe it got removed?
  3. Run the command sudo debsums -c | xargs -rd '\n' -- dpkg -S | cut -d : -f 1 | sort -u to get the corrupted packages:

  1. Reinstall the packages listed: sudo apt reinstall aptitude bash bolt fluid-soundfont-gs gpg-wks-server iriunwebcam libwine-development python3-pycryptodome zoom
  2. That should fix it! Try the other things I tried too if this doesn't work.
