Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

Should be able to update the game Endless Dungeon. Instead, updating causes a Disk write error.

I checked the SSD health, no issue to report. Validating game files does not fix the issue. Cannot move the game somewhere else through steam. Cannot completely uninstall through steam, needs manual intervention.

My best guess would be that the issue comes from the file name including a space (Endless Dungeon.exe). Folders names don't seem to cause any issue, for instance DARK SOULS REMASTERED works fine, others as well, but their files do not contain spaces and thus cause no error, even though they're in the same SSD and steam library folder.

I cannot with certainty affirm this is the issue as I don't know the underlying behaviors and commands steam is running, but I had issues with my initial installation when one of my steam library folder path contained a space. This leads me to believe the issue is similar in the cause aspect.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Install Endless Dungeon
  2. Try to update it
  3. Disk write error in steam
Bbockc 2023-12-12 github

I tried manually removing the Endless Dungeon.exe file and then retrying the update. The issue still occurs, but on a different file :

So it seems that my initial assumption that the error was caused by a space in the file name is wrong. I can't really tell where the issue could come from though, the logs simply state steam wasn't able to move out a file, but do not try to explain why. Strange that it only occurs on this specific game folder and only those 2 files.

I'll leave this open until I can confirm the next game update works fine, in which case I will close this issue and assume the issue was on the developer side. Otherwise, I'll keep this issue open and hope for a long-term solution :)

Bbockc 2023-12-14 github

It happened again, after booting on windows to play The Finals.

Same error as in the first message. I can't really understand why booting on Windows would mess up with those 2 specific files only. Any advice ?

Vvadcx 2023-12-16 github

You are sharing the data partition (NTFS) between Windows and Linux, correct?

I suppose it should be fairly easy to find out what's the underlying cause, because "Disk write failure" comes from Steam but we would want the error msg from the OS. Are there any better messages in logs?

For system calls, use strace and then search in the log for the file paths and copy the part where it receives any kind of error there.

strace -o STRACE.LOG nano hello.txt is a tiny example to understand how it would work

  1. strace steam
  2. Wait until it "updates" and fails
  3. Quit everything (would CTRL+C work?) and examine both logs, search for path. You can probably filter out = 0 because 0 is often not an error code.

Thanks for the insight @vadcx, by greping the output of strace looking for ENDLESS Dungeon.exe, I got this:

I am not sure I correctly understand everything, but this line

23591 rename("/drives/ssd-512gb/Games/SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/ENDLESS Dungeon/ENDLESS Dungeon.exe", "/drives/ssd-512gb/Games/SteamLibrary/steamapps/temp/1485590/ENDLESS Dungeon.exe") = -1 EISDIR (Is a directory)

makes me believe that the OS thinks the .exe file is a directory, but I can't really understand why.

I took a look at the downloaded update file located in the temp directory and it has those attributes :

drwxrwxrwx 1 ... ... 0 Dec 14 23:13 'ENDLESS Dungeon.exe'

Meaning the OS absolutely considers this file as a directory. There's obviously nothing inside this supposed directory.

@bockc I just read your appended edit, you are spot on. Obviously it shouldn't be a directory. It means Steam replaces the .exe file with an empty folder at some point? Assuming the .exe arrives intact when booting from a fresh/repaired installation of the game (on Windows+Steam)...

Bbockc 2023-12-31 github

@vadcx I don't know if Steam is the one responsible for turning this file into a directory, unfortunately strace doesn't seem to indicate much more about why this is happening. Something definitely transforms this file, but it could be a bug with ntfs-3g. Or Windows itself wrongly reading the data on the drive and marking it as a directory. Or even a little mishap from the developers of Endless Dungeon.

Funnily, when trying to rm the .exe, linux tells me this is a directory and obviously it fails. But trying to then rmdir it, gives a No such file or directory error. An interesting fact that I didn't stress in my previous message is that this supposed directory has a size of 0B on the disk, which is very unusual. The only way to get rid of it is to rm -rf it, as everything else fails, which explains why Steam is unable to move/uninstall the game (because Steam will try to clean the update files when doing so).

I left the game in this state since I encountered the issue. I am going to remove the problematic files and re-apply the update as it already worked before. I don't really know what more I could do, I am going to monitor the game's updating behavior for the next few updates.

I'll also edit the issue title to better reflect what we discovered

EDIT: Even rm -rf doesn't work :eyes: . Using dolphin from KDE allows me to move the files to the trash and update the game, but I can't empty the trash now lol. Thankfully, the trash empties itself when it detects those files after a while.

supposed directory has a size of 0B on the disk

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=208716 and https://serverfault.com/questions/538952/folder-sizes-differ-within-two-copied-ntfs-file-trees-using-ntfs-3g explain that "0 byte" folders are probably OK.

EDIT: Even rm -rf doesn't work 👀 .

I wonder if this is an ACL issue, an issue with one of the Alternate Data Streams or something ntfs-3g literally does not support? I recently learned that Windows 10 would silently redirect an old application's write calls to its installation directory (Program Files x86) somewhere to User's own Local folder. It'd not surprise me if it was one more of those reparse point tricks or whatever new.

Here it says corrupted ownership: https://superuser.com/questions/1513255/undeletable-directories-on-ntfs-partition - weird, because root + usually ntfs-3g is mounted as 777

Interesting, I didn't know about that. I guess we can conclude that the issue is not on Steam's side, I will try to take this to ntfs-3g to see if they plan to do something about it.

Thanks a lot for your help @vadcx !

@bockc I would not conclude this as an NTFS-3G issue until you can confirm & reproduce anything? I just posted a couple curious links

@vadcx Ah yes of course, I'm sorry if my phrasing was ambiguous. I wrote:

I guess we can conclude that the issue is not on Steam's side

But I didn't want to imply that it also concludes the issue as coming from ntfs-3g, far from it.
I wanted to point out that this is the most plausible cause, but we obviously can't be sure about that yet.
I haven't opened an issue to ntfs-3g yet, since I haven't encountered the issue again, though I also haven't booted back on windows since the incident
I'll see if I can gather more information if the issue arises again, and I'll see what to do when I'll be there :)

My bad, English isn't my first language, I might have been a little clumsy when I wrote my previous message ;)
