It's same on Gnome 3 and MATE.
Maybe it's caused by AMD drivers.
I'll test this when I get home (in ~4 hours) and see what results I get.
I'm unable to reproduce on my Intel Netbook/Xubuntu.
UPDATE: Just attempted it on Mint 14.1 with no success. However, I would like to point out that this is a duplicate of #1082.
After last update(s), the labels now do not remain on top. Also, it's a little bit faster, but still slower, than on Windows.

For example in discussions.
Labels are slow, will not disappear and sometime overlaps everything.
