System information

  • Steam client version: 1.0.0.82-2
  • Distribution: Endeavour OS
  • Steam client beta: Have the issue on both beta and non-beta
  • Have checked for system updates
  • GPU: Nvidia RTX3070Ti with latest "nvidia-open-dkms" driver (Had the issue with "nvidia" driver as well)

The right click menus sometimes don't open and sometimes do open but clicking on something just closes instead of taking action. Specifically when putting emotes on a message in the friends messenger, sometimes would have to right click and click the emote or sticker several times till I can put it.
This issue was not present on my KDE installation neither Wayland nor x11; but is present on Gnome Wayland.

I have tried and have this on two separate installs of the distro
I've tried running steam with "env GDK_BACKEND=x11 steam"
I have tried beta or without beta
I have tried disabling hardware acceleration
I have tried context menu focus compatibility mode but it still happens

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. On Endeavour OS or perhaps other distros too, Install Gnome and run it with Wayland
  2. Open a friend chat and put a message or a sticker/emote
  3. Right click the message and try to put several stickers and emotes as a reaction; will notice some of the time the menu doesn't open on the first right click and sometimes the emote doesn't get placed while the menu closes after clicking on an emote.

If you have any idea of things I can try to potentially fix this I'm not afraid of any system modifications so feel free to suggest no matter how advanced. I prefer to fix it on gnome rather than having to use a different desktop environment. Since I know for sure the problem wasn't present for me on KDE, there is always that but is not optimal.
Thank you

Hello @Nythsha, there's a decent chance this is the same issue as #9273. From the comment at https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/9273#issuecomment-1623439971, you might be able to workaround the issue by holding a modifier key like control while clicking the emote.

I've been trying different wayland compositors and desktop environments and can confirm that I didn't have the issue on niri, wayfire and hyprland
It's only on gnome so I really wonder why
(I still want to use gnome so I'm determined to fix this issue)

Holding down modifier keys, is unfortunately not fixing it for me
