Your system information

  • Steam client version (build number or date):
  • Distribution (e.g. Ubuntu): NixOS
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: No (dont think so)
  • Have you checked for system updates?: No
  • Steam Logs: [generate by running this command in a terminal tar -zcvf ~/Desktop/steam-logs.tar.gz ~/.steam/steam/logs]
  • GPU: Intel integrated

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

I installed steam on nixos. everything worked fine during the login process (at least what is relevant for this issue).
when i was logged in, the steam friends window and a black window opened. me (dumb as i am) immedeately closed the friends window. now i always only get the black window. steam doesnt seem to generate any error messages and when i open it in a shell, the process ends and only the black window remains.

this issue is also not new, i had it alround 1 year ago, but didnt open an issue.
i found many similar posts online, but none of them where quite the same.

i would guess the main window somehow doesnt get rendered correctly (has some html/css bug or smthin) and therefore results in a blackscreen.

some system specs:

  • OS: Nixos (unstable channel nixpkgs)
  • WM: NIri (wayland) + xwayland-sattelite for x11 support
  • Graphics: Intel UHD Graphics 620
  • host: Dell Latitude 7490
  • CPU: Intel i5-8350U (8) @ 3.6GHz
  • Linux kernel: 6.12.42
  • memory: 32gb

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. use wayland (probably specifically niri) with xwayland-sattelite on nixos
  2. open steam
  3. log in
  4. look at a plain black window

help would be greatly appreciated

Hello @theNoof, this reads like the same issue as #11488. Feel free to add your findings with logs to the older issue report.

Closing as a duplicate.
