Also have this problem. After steam updated some days ago, TF2 crashs on start. I use opensuse 12.2, and bumblebee with nv gt555m videocard. Output is the same.
I have then same situation when I run TF2 with optirun command. But when I use primus to launch TF2, then it looks like this: game is launched, I've chosen the server and I've connected to it, the game crashes just after joining the game.
My specs:
Intel Core i5 2410M
nVidia GeForce 540M
4 GB RAM
System: Linux Fedora 18 (installed as beta, updated using yum)
Drivers: nvidia proprietary 310.19
Have you tried this using Primus?
Have you tried not using optirun at all (using the Intel GPU)?
TF2 runs using the Intel GPU fine (albeit with reduced graphics).
Primus does not work for me at all with steam (and consequently, TF2):
primusrun steam
Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1358286427_client)
Xlib: extension "NV-GLX" missing on display ":0".
SteamUpdateUI: An X Error occurred
X Error of failed request: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)
At that point, steam is left hung, and I have to ctl+c to kill it.
I've completely uninstalled, purged, and reinstalled multiple iterations of the nvidia drivers (both 304.64 and 310.14) , bumblebee, and primus, but primus continues to not work.
Primus does work with other programs/games though (ie: glxgears, humble indie bundle installed Amnesia )
Have you tried running just TF2 under primus? To do that right-click on Team Fortress 2 in your Steam library, select PROPERTIES, then SET LAUNCH OPTIONS... and specify this:
primusrun %command%
Then launch tf2 and it will be run using primusrun.
Still no luck with Primus - did what you suggested, and here's the output:

@chrym44: what you describe sounds like a different bug -- if it still occurs, please file a new bug report and include your crash dump ID so we can look into it.
@chippey: this error likely means you're on a 64-bit system and have 64-bit primus installed and working, but not 32-bit, and Steam and most Steam games are 32-bit. You'll have to get 32-bit primus working to run it with Steam.
I have same issue. Previously TF2 Beta and TF2 are working but now, they are crashes when I trying to launch. I can only see white "Loading..." page.

@Bl00dyHell: are you using primusrun to run TF2? Have you verified that you have primusrun set up to run 32 bit applications?
@davidw-valve I am not using primusrun and do not have Nvidia Optimus hardware. I think my problem is different little bit, but there is too many bug reports about crashing TF2 and I do not want to create one more. Hardware is different but the problem is almost same.
@Bl00dyHell: Can you please create a new bug report with all this information? I will make sure it gets assigned to the right place.
@davidw-valve not quite sure how to setup 32 bit primusrun on my system. I've already had the 32bit nvidia drivers installed, but I'm not sure how to configure primus to use them when running with steam / tf2. Are there plans to make optirun work again, or is primusrun going to be the focus for optimus hardware with valve?
@chippey: Steam is likely to work with optirun, but primusrun is preferred. Are you able to run other 32 bit programs that use 3D graphics on your system using optirun?
Have you set primusrun up to run 32 bit programs? There are instructions for instance here on how to get it all set up: http://cjenkins.wordpress.com/2013/01/01/steam-for-linux-on-optimus-enabled-computer-running-ubuntu-12-04-64bits/
Not sure if they're 32 bit or not, but glxinfo, glxspheres, and glxgears all run both with optirun and primusrun. Blew away my nvidia, bumblebee, and primus install, and started from scratch again using that guide you linked (pretty much my exact setup before it turns out, except for making the OPTIMUS_PREFIX env var). Still no go with steam or TF2, same errors as before.
I don't know if it's 32bit or not, but Anomaly from the Humble Indie Bundle exhibits the same errors with primusrun (however, Anomaly does work with optirun). Other HIB games work fine (or at least, launch) with primus (ie, Torchlight, Grimrock, Bastion, Amnesia).
@chippey: you can determine if a binary executable is 32 vs 64 bit by using "file " it will tell you if it's a 32 or 64 bit executable.
glxinfo, glxspheres, and glxgears are 64bit. So are the majority of the HIB games, with the exception of Anomaly. (Although Anomaly does work with optirun).
At this point I am at a loss on how to get 32bit primus working. I do have the additional 32bit nvidia drivers installed, and verified that they are in /usr/lib32.
Here's the result of showing info from my primus package:
apt-cache show primus

Description: nVidia Optimus support through offloading via GLX forking
Primus is a shared library that provides OpenGL and GLX APIs and implements
low-overhead local-only client-side OpenGL offloading via GLX forking,
similar to VirtualGL. It intercepts GLX calls and redirects GL rendering
to a secondary X display, presumably driven by a faster GPU. On swapping
buffers, rendered contents are read back using a PBO and copied onto
the drawable it was supposed to be rendered on in the first place.
Basically all that gibberish means that nVidia Optimus can work better than
with the Bumblebee project.
I tried forcing a 32bit install of primus; the following is my attempt to do so:
chipmunk-laptop lib32 # apt-get install primus:i386

At that point, I gave up. (it appears that the sticking point is bbswitch-dkms:i386, which yields as being uninstallable on a 64bit system).
@chippey: I suggest contacting Primus's maintainer ( Alexander Monakov [email protected] ) for help in getting it working and running 32 bit apps on your system.
Edit : not the same bug, sorry for this post.
I have the same problem (with CS:S). I'm running with "optirun %command%". Running without optirun works. I can run other 32-bit games (test case: Warcraft 3 using wine) with no problem using optirun.
Edit: just tested with primusrun, that works fine.

The program 'hl2_linux' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadDrawable (invalid Pixmap or Window parameter)'.

(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

@ jethrogb thanks! That works now for getting primusrun to work. I'm getting the same crash with TF2 now as others when multithread/core rendering is enabled.
I also get other errors with primus and other programs that seem to indicate primus's implimentation isn't as complete as optirun (ie: "primus: sorry, not implemented: glXUseXFont"). Also, I notice there's a gamma shift between when using primusrun and optirun (optirun displays correct gamma).
Apart from that, optirun still causes TF2 to crash on launch with the latest updates pushed out to steam + tf2.
Issue transferred to ValveSoftware/Source-1-Games#70.
This issue is closed - continue conversation there.
Nothing extracted yet.
So, previously TF2 was working, but after it, and steam updated, it no longer launches (a blank (black) screen fullscreens, then dies).
I have verified the game cache files via steam, it it reported them as fine.
Here's the stdout messages after launching steam (with bumblebee/optirun) to after tf2 fails to lauch:
Here's my system specs:
