Symptoms

Hello team,

I hope you are well. I contacted Steam Support about the current issues I face when playing Elden Ring in Online mode and they told me that I should raise this with you. You can find the conversation history with Steam Support in the attached file. There I described the issues in more detail and for your convenience I will do so here as well.

The issues I have are related to Elden Ring and its DLC (Shadow of the Erdtree) respectively. The first issue is that almost always when I switch to multiplayer and look for a game to join, when a connection is established and I am being summoned to another world, my game freezes and most of the time I get a message saying "Unable to join session".

The second issue I got is when I am playing, let's say, against invaders, my game just crashes and closes unexpectedly. I also get white screens when I am searching for cooperators but I couldn't manage to create a screenshot as I need to hard reset my PC at this point. I remember I previously tried some of the other compatibility layers but the result was the same, I wasn't able to join multiplayer sessions. Just to note, this happens every first time I get summoned. After that I join other players worlds normally.

Other thing to note is that my internet connection is not the issue as I am able to access Internet during play. I also update my system regularly, which includes drivers as well. A Steam support agent told me this falls under the whitelist category but I am not so sure about it, and that is why I raise it as a compatibility issue. You can let me know if I need to raise the issue again under different category. You can find additional screenshots in the attached files. Image Image Image Image

Reproduction

  1. Launch Elden Ring in compatibility mode using Proton Experimental
  2. Enter the game
  3. Search for cooperators or trying to join other player's worlds
  4. The screen freezes for a couple of seconds, then I get "Unable to join session" message

Hello @alex-1999-ux, we're using one issue report per unofficially supported game title, so I've gone ahead and transferred this issue report to https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/5613#issuecomment-6218227698.
