Not all games are supported yet. Check https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/28#issuecomment-11557842 for a list of supported games.
@mcmihai VVVVVV is one of the supported games.
I have the exact same problem with FTL
Lubuntu 12.04 64 bit
Basically, this game is not actually supported, even though it appears in the Steam Library.

Well I suppose there's no issue then, though there should probably be some sort of catch to prevent steam from thinking the game is installed.
It appears to be an issue when you have purchased not only the game, but the soundtrack as well (perhaps only via a bundle). That's how it is for both FTL and Defcon on my box: the soundtrack gets downloaded, but the game doesn't. This can be checked by browsing the local files.
FTL is not yet generally available on Linux. To get it requires a special key from its author. Otherwise all you get is the mp3s.
VVVVVV does seem to work and it definitely shows its disk space requirements for me. When was the last time you tried this one?
I tried VVVVVV again just now and got the same result. I restarted Steam about 20 minutes ago, if that makes a difference.
@bdeen-valve FTL password for In-Steam Linux beta is publicly available in the FTL forum (http://www.ftlgame.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=9682). However nothing happens.
FYI: FTL was just added to the official supported game list. Please delete local content and download again.

I still have this problem with Defcon and Braid on Linux Mint 13 Mate. There's no download bar appearing at the bottom of the steam window (which would normally indicate that the download is taking place)
VVVVVV does not start for me as well. Both the 32-bit and 64-bit executables are missing. In fact, checking the Steam directory, it would seem all files for VVVVVV are missing.
The prblem is thats not just only game, the half of my library have this problem. Two options, or you remove this games for now, or put the binaries. But is stupid have a game in the library for nothing.
Ahh...I was running a beta branch of VVVVVV. It's not available officially on Linux. However, if you talk to the developers of that game and can get a beta key to it, it can run.

Or just go to the Linux tab of the Store and you can see the list of available open games there.
The reason these games are appearing in your Library->Linux Games list is because they have a beta branch somewhere that is marked that it can be run on Linux. You'd need to contact that Game's dev team to get the beta keys if you want to have them run for you (possibly - they may not be ready with it yet).
A number of my games, VVVVVV and FTL, for example, show no disk space requirement when installing. Installation completes instantly without an error, but there is no game install. The properties show that the game takes up no space, and a missing executable error pops up when I try to run it. Other games act normally.
